Comparison of Retarded and Non-Retarded Adolescents on Need-Approval
Age and sex matched groups of normal, institutionalized and non-institutionalized mentally retarded adolescents were compared on need-approval as measured by the Marlowe-Crowne Scale. All groups appeared significantly different from one another with the strength of need-approval following a non-institutionalized, institutionalized, and normal order from high to low respectively. Because previous data would predict a greater need for approval in r…
Relative Effectiveness of Modeling and Verbal Instructions on Severe Retardates' Gross Motor Performance
Previous research utilizing modeling procedures with the severely retarded has used verbal instruction contiguous to imitation training. This study explored the relative efficacy of modeling and verbal instruction employed independently. The failure to achieve imitative learning under either treatment condition is consistent with the reported non-imitative status of this population. Methodological implications for modeling as a behavior modificat…
Effects of Reinforcement Condition upon Long-Term Retention of Retarded
4 groups of educable, teenage retardates learned a motor task, each under a different token contingency condition. 14 days later, Ss were tested on two retention measures to determine relationship between reinforcement condition and long-term memory. The recall measure indicated that a response-cost condition resulted in higher recall than the reward, combination cost/reward or non-token controls, however, a savings score analysis did not demonst…
A Short Form of the Wisc for Use with the Mentally Retarded
A short form of the WISC was investigated for use with mentally retarded children. WISC records of 70 Ss were rescored using an abbreviated procedure; correlations with the original ranged from .80 on Picture Completion to .90 on Block Design with correlation of .95, .95, and .91 for the Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale respectively
