Psychometric Properties of the Scale of Individual Differences-Measure of Hope
Responses of 160 subjects to the Snyder Hope scale were factor analyzed. Oblique rotation yielded two factors, which were difficult to interpret. When the two variables that made the interpretation difficult were eliminated, the remaining six gave a single factor. Spearman-Brown formula, Cronbach coefficient α, analysis of variance, Rulon's split-half, and average correlation of one item with the rest of the items were also employed to estimate t…
Factor Analysis of Authority Behaviour Inventory
A factor analysis of the responses from 185 subjects to Rigby's (1987) Authority Behaviour Inventory Scale allowed other estimates of homogeneity. The results suggest that the scale is highly heterogeneous for the sample of 185 Canadian students
Factor Analysis of the Stewart Personality Inventory Research Form and Its Correlations With Some Other Personality Instruments
The 80-item Stewart Personality Inventory (SPI) has 8 sub-scales; Orderliness, Future orientation, Extraversion, Self-concept, Autonomy, Risk-taking, Nurturance and Scientific practicality. The inventory and scoring methods are summarised. A factor analysis yielded a very similar factor structure to that of an earlier study, despite different factor methods and cultural settings for the studies. Presented also are correlations of the SPI sub-scal…
Factor Analytical Study of Nunnally's Scale of Popular Concepts of Mental Health
This study reports factor analysis of and estimates of reliability of responses to Nunnally's scale measuring popular concepts of mental health. The study employed 179 subjects. The factor analyses resulted in 18 factors, which are difficult to interpret. Both estimates of reliability are low. That is, all the measures indicate that the scale lacks homogeneity
Factor Analysis of the Machiavellian Scale
The paper is a report of a factor analytical study of the Christie and Gies Machiavellian Scale. Subjects were 122 part-time and full-time students from Laurentian University, Canada. Principal components analysis and varimax rotation revealed five psychologically interpretable factors with, latent roots above 1.0. These were named Machiavellian tactics, Pollyanna syndrome, Machiavellian tactics negative, Moral ideal and Machiavellian view. These…
Graffiti of Canadian High School Students
This study classified sex and cultural differences as reflected by inscriptions in washrooms and confirmed hypotheses that (1) females will write more graffiti than males, (2) there will be no sex differences in the proportion of sex-related graffiti to the total number of graffiti between males' and females' washrooms, (3) female students will write more sex-romantic graffiti than males, and male students will write more sex-erotic graffiti than…
Reactions to Crowding in Different Settings
The present study examined how subjects respond to personal space encroachments in a laboratory ( N = 108) or shopping centre ( N = 120) setting. Male or female confederates, with or without a question, intruded upon the personal space of male or female subjects. Two different questions were asked in two different settings to create the same condition. In the laboratory, subjects waited for a shorter time when they were intruded upon with a quest…
Punctuality, Consistency, and Conformity
It was hypothesized that punctuality, consistency, and conformity are independent traits. From 240 students ratings were collected. Factor analysis and Campbell and Fiske's (1959) methods were used to analyze the data. Both methods confirmed the hypothesis
Punctuality
It was hypothesized that punctuality is a unitary trait. Four areas of university life were chosen for the study: application for admission; appearance for registration; submission of the first and second term fees by 358 students. Punctuality was measured in terms of closeness to the last official date for a given activity. For example, if the 15th of August was the last date for submission of application for admission, any student who applied o…
