  • Are Good Citizens Religious? Exploring the Link between Organizational Citizenship Behaviours and Religious Beliefs

Open Access•SA Gyekye, Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion•2011

Several influential studies have found religion to be an important determinant of human behavior and organizational behaviors. Research(e.g. Ntalianis & Raja 2002) along this line has suggested a direct association between religious affiliations and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). Yet, no study has tested this relationship directly. This study was designed to empirically examine this relationship. It thus investigated the possible inf…

  • Religious beliefs and responsibility attributions for industrial accidents among Ghanaian workers

Open Access•SA Gyekye, Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion•2010

IntroductionAttribution theory basically deals with how people explain their social world and its many phenomena, and conceptualises their causality and responsibility assignment as either logical or biased. According to the literature on causal attribution and accidents, attributional distortions are quite common in novel and ambiguous situations (Wong & Weiner, 1981 ) such as occurrences in industrial accidents (Dejoy, 1994; Turner & Pidgeon, 1…

  • Are “Good Soldiers” Safety Conscious? An Examination of the Relationship Between Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and Perception of Workplace Safety

Open Access•Seth Ayim Gyekye, Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2005

This study examined the relationship between safety climate and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). It involved a comparative analysis between workers active in citizenship behaviors and their colleagues who were passive or inactive regarding OCBs. Additional analyses also compared job satisfaction, compliance with safe work policies, and accident frequency between the two groups. T -tests were used in these comparative analyses. A positi…

  • Does Pressure from the Work Community Increase Risk Taking

    Open Access•Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1995

Based on the zero-risk theory, it was assumed that the pressure created by the work community is an "extra motive" for increased risk taking. The pressure from the work community was operationalized as the influence of coworkers, foremen, and customers. A risk-taking scale was constructed based on the interviews of 72 victims of serious occupational accidents. Analysis did not confirm the hypothesis because there was no significant difference bet…

  • Defensive Attribution Hypothesis and Serious Occupational Accidents

    Open Access•Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

Based on the defensive attribution hypothesis, we assume that the victims of serious occupational accidents tend to attribute their accidents to external factors, while their coworkers and foremen tend to attribute the accidents to the victims' own action. The data to test this hypothesis consisted of 99 serious occupational accidents in southern Finland. In connection with the accident, or after the investigation at the accident site, 73 victims…

  • Convergent and Discriminant Validity of Firo-B Questionnaire

    Open Access•Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

The Kramer-Froehle controversy about the construct validity of FIRO-B questionnaire was evaluated with a multitrait-multimethod design. 113 women and 26 men completed the FIRO-B questionnaire. After the examiner had given a lecture on the FIRO-dimensions, the subjects rated themselves on these dimensions. Only three out of six intercorrelations on the validity diagonal were statistically significant. Of the discriminant validity comparisons 80% m…

  • Two Psychometric Problems of the Firo-B Questionnaire

    Open Access•Simo Salminen•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1988

Two psychometric problems of FIRO-B scales, namely, reliability and social desirability, were studied. Subjects were 152 women and 36 men from the introductory course in social psychology. They completed the FIRO-B questionnaire and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Three of the six coefficients of reproducibility were below a satisfactory level. All scalability coefficients were near the level usually required. Correlations among sco…
