Cognitive Correlates and Outcome of Cognitive, Behavioral and Physiological Treatments of Agoraphobia
The primary aim of this investigation was to ascertain the cognitive correlates and outcome of cognitive, behavioral, and psychophysiological treatments of agoraphobia. 39 severe and chronic agoraphobics with panic attacks, diagnosed using DSM-III criteria, were randomly assigned to one of the three cognitive-behavioral treatments: paradoxical intention, graduated exposure, or progressive deep muscle relaxation training. The effects of the treatm…
Temporal Stability and Internal Reliability of Measures of Children's Social Skill
According to recent reviews of the literature, interest in assessment of social skills of children has been growing (Michelson & Wood, 1980; Michelson, Foster, & Ritchey, in press). However, requisite psychometric properties of commonly used measures have rarely been reported. To remedy this relative vacuum 90 elementary school children (M = 13 yr.) were given three measures and retested 2 wk. later. The Children's Assertive Behavior Scale (Miche…
Psychotherapeutic Outcome for Children in a Community Mental Health Center
Premature terminations by clients and poor psychotherapeutic outcomes are problems for community mental health centers. Psychological, demographic, and treatment measures were collected on 121 children and their families to identify salient factors which could predict treatment outcomes. Utilizing discriminant functions, comparisons were made between premature vs planned terminations and good vs guarded prognoses. The resulting profiles were clas…
Investigation of Periodicity in Crisis Intervention Calls over an Eight-Year Span
Over an 8-yr. period 36,268 calls were received by the Crisis Intervention Center of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between lunar phases and crisis calls. Pearson correlations were performed but no significant values were obtained. Exploratory Fourier analyses showed trends in the data not related to lunar phases. Findings appear consistent with those of other investigations of lunar influe…
