Wedding Songs and the Wedding Feast as Formative Elements of the Kalevala
The wedding celebration between Ilmarinen and Pohjan tytär (Daughter of the North) occupies a central position in all editions of the Kalevala. This article argues that it was precisely the wedding song material and the very idea of the wedding that not only enabled the creation of the epic but also significantly influenced Lönnrot's imaginative contributions, as evident in his editorial decisions from the earliest stages. Changes in the portraya…
Runojen t…
Eeppisen runolaulun skeema, aihelmat ja uutta luova muuntelu
Elias Lönnrot loi Kalevalan kertomusrungon pohjoisilta karjalais-suomalaisilta alueilta tallennetun eeppisen runolaulun pohjalta. Myöhemmin runsaaksi muodostuneen aineiston tutkimukseen syntyi suomalainen koulukunta, jonka analyysin ytimessä oli variaatio. Variaatio käsitettiin yleensä mekaaniseksi, eikä laulajien luovaa toimintaa pyritty dokumentoimaan tai tutkittu. Laaja aineisto on myöhemmin mahdollistanut runolaulututkimuksen yhä uusista näkö…

Interactive Oral Composition: Resources, Strategies, and the Construction of Improvised Utterances in a Finnish Freestyle Rap Battle
The freestyle rap battle is a contemporary form of contest poetry introduced to Finland as part of the originally African and Latino American, but today globally spread, hip-hop youth culture. During the last decades, Finnish young people have dynamically developed the art of orally improvised rap and vernacular performance cultures. Contributing to the study of oral composition and argumentative forms of oral poetry, this paper examines the cons…
Words as Events: Cretan mantinádes in Performance and Composition
Words as Events introduces the tradition of short, communicative rhyming couplets, the mantinádes, as still sung and recited in a variety of performance situations on the island of Crete. Recently, these poems have also entered modern mass media and they are widely being exchanged as text messages by Cretans. Focusing on the multi-functionality of the short form, Sykäri demonstrates how the traditional register gives voice to individual experienc…
