Confronting the National in the Musical Past
This chapter offers an approach complementary to that of Applegate, and attempts some further qualification to her characterization of nineteenth-century musicians as cosmopolitans. The chapter focuses on the musicians themselves and the social contexts and practical consequences of their …
Quantifying the Qualitative
Two studies are described which take a psychometric approach to a qualitative phenomenon. A computational analysis of poetry was conducted. Using a lexicon programme, patterns emerged generally supporting the idea of a poet's everchanging thematic preoccupations. Joy-Riding among British Youth
The behavioural and legal aspects of the problematic and repetitive criminal behaviour of aggravated vehicle taking or "joyriding" are reviewed as context for a study in Great Britain of data from 20 males imprisoned for joy-riding and/or vehicle theft for gain, 10 habitual joyriders who were members of a youth club established to counter the problem, 10 imprisoned house-breakers, and 10 males with no criminal convictions. No specific ethnographi…
The Role of Positive and Negative Affect in Flashbulb Memory
All previous reports on the phenomenon of flashbulb memories relate to hearing of shocking (or "bad") news: in other words, that of negative affect. This study represents the first attempt to investigate whether those criteria used to define flashbulb memories would similarly apply to events of similar strength but of positive affect. 70 questionnaires were administered relating to 20 events over a 10-yr. period. No significant differences were f…
A Pilot Study of Nonverbal Cues in Videotelecommunicatton
With the increasing popularity of low-cost videocommunications systems and their attendant low bandwidth-resolution problems, receivers are likely to experience difficulties in recognising the sender's intended expression and feeling. As an extension of previous work in the area, this pilot study investigated the effects of three forms of degraded imaging (and their combined effects) on the nonverbal aspects of communication for one person. Degra…
