Treatment of Test Anxiety by Applied Relaxation and Cue-Controlled Relaxation
Several procedures have been used to produce relaxation and thus reduce test anxiety. The purpose of this study was to compare three types of treatment of test anxiety: applied relaxation, cognitive cue-controlled relaxation, and conditioned cue-controlled relaxation. Also, cognitive and conditioning explanations for the two cue-controlled treatments were explored Subjects were female undergraduates ( N = 18) scoring in the upper 15% of the distr…
Note on Demand Characteristics in Analogue Research on Small Animal Phobias
The present report reviewed the analogue literature on small animal phobias to determine the extent to which researchers employed “blind” experimenters in the assessment of behavioral fear. A total of 87 analogue studies on small animal phobias appearing between January, 1971 and December, 1976 in six professional journals were reviewed. The review showed that only 29% of the studies clearly indicated the employment of “blind” assessors. The resu…
Cue-Controlled Relaxation in Reduction of Chronic Nervous Habits
The present paper documents two case studies in which cue-controlled relaxation was used in the reduction of chronic nailbiting by 2 adults. Results indicated substantial increases in nail-length and decreases in the frequency of habit at post-treatment and follow-up assessments. Successful application of the cue-controlled technique to situations unrelated to nailbiting was also reported. A description of the cue-controlled procedure, its potent…
