  • The Relationship between Self-Monitored Aggression and the MMPI-2 F, 4, 9 Composite and Anger Content Scale Scores

    Open Access•Shawn O'Laughlin, Thomas Schill•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

Undergraduates, 47 men and 79 women, took the MMPI-2 and self-monitored their aggressive acting out for one week. As expected, the MMPI composite score for F, 4, 9 and the anger content scale were correlated positively with monitored aggressive acting out, particularly for men. However, the magnitude of the correlations was slight, indicating it would be inappropriate to use them to make critical judgments regarding aggressive acting out with thi…

  • Relation of Expression of Hostility to Coping with Stress

    Open Access•Thomas Schill, Nerella V Ramanaiah et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

27 male and 27 female undergraduates currently coping well with stressful life events were compared on each subscale of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory with a group (20 women and 12 men) coping poorly. Poor copers scored higher on the following subscales, Indirect, Guilt, Resentment, Suspiciousness and Total Score. No differences occurred for the expressive subscales, Assault and Verbal. Efficient coping is associated with reacting to stress …

  • Construct Validation of a Method for Defining Efficient and Inefficient Copers

    Open Access•Thomas Schill, Nerella V Ramanaiah et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

Some validity for a procedure to identify efficient and inefficient copers was evident in this study. 36 efficient copers (defined by high stress scores and low anxiety scores) dealt with life stress primarily by trying to analyze their problems and take direct action. 50 inefficient copers (high stress and high anxiety scores) stopped functioning well, sought the support of others and, if male, resorted to drugs, alcohol, or sex as a source of c…

  • Humor Preference and Coping with Stress

    Open Access•Thomas Schill, Shawn O'Laughlin•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

The present study was done to determine whether humor preference was related to how well one copes with stressful life events. Ranked preference for sexual humor was related to efficient coping for male ( n = 79) but not female ( n = 74) college students. Results were seen as consistent in part with Freud's theory of humor
