Decision Costs and Betting Market Efficiency
In this research we examine empirically the linkage between decision costs and market efficiency in the context of racetrack betting markets. We analyze more than 10,000 horse races and demonstrate that metrics of non-optimizing behavior are inversely related to the volume of betting: we are less likely to observe evidence of non-optimizing behavior when examining data from racetracks with larger betting pools. Population and Employment Patterns in Hong Kong
We examine the spatial distribution of population and employment in Hong Kong by specifying and estimating monocentric and polycentric population and employment density functions. Our empirical results indicate that population concentrations in Hong Kong are best characterized as monocentric, with the single center located in West Kowloon. This research examines the quantitative impacts of welfare program characteristics and individual characteristics on both the labor force and welfare participation decisions of low-income females with children. The participation decisions are estimated jointly as a bivariate probit model using data derived from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey for the years 1979 to 1990, inclusive.
