Characteristics of Marathon Volunteers
The study was designed to survey the extent of undergraduate interest in marathon groups and to investigate the personality characteristics of volunteers for these groups. 367 volunteers and 814 non-volunteers from the same university were compared on levels of dependency and sense of well-being. Findings suggest that volunteers have a lower sense of well-being but greater needs for independence. The results were integrated with previous findings…
Arousal Level and Stimulus Response in Alcoholics after Drinking
Changes in basal skin conductance and galvanic skin response to aversive stimuli were measured in 27 alcoholics before and after drinking small to moderate amounts of alcohol. Conductance increased and response decreased after drinking, suggesting that in alcoholics alcohol consumption is an anxiety stimulus and causes a reduction in over-all reactivity
A Behaviorally Oriented Treatment Program for Alcoholism
A review of the area concerned with psychotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of alcoholism yielded a considerably less than optimistic reaction regarding the efficacy of such treatment maneuvers. Sensing the need for an investment of effort in newer directions, a treatment program, which follows the principles of behavior modification, was developed and is delineated here
Effect of “In Vivo” Training on Experimental Desensitization of a Phobia
2 groups of Ss were treated for phobic reaction to snakes with the method of desensitization based on reciprocal inhibition. The group which received “in vivo” training with the phobic object, in addition, achieved a greater relative change than the group which did not ( P < .05). Both groups combined showed significant change following therapy
Focal and Contextual Stimulus Variables in Verbal Conditioning
Part I of the study dealt with the development of classes of words which were characterized by within-class variation, such variation being based on the degree of class belongingness. Using a modified Q-sort and a rating procedure, it was found that groups of Ss could consistently discriminate between words within a class. Part II dealt with verbal conditioning. Using a modified Taffel procedure, Ss selected a word from a pair of words presented.…
