  • Advancing Health Equity in Pediatric Primary Care

    Open Access•Kayla L Karvonen, Hope Williams-Burt et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2025

Health is a fundamental human right and families deserve health equity, a state where all children have the opportunity to reach their full health potential. Black families and children are disproportionately burdened with racial inequities in morbidity and mortality. Although evidence supports racially concordant care and wraparound pediatric primary services to address racial inequities, there remains a significant gap in developing and evaluat…

  • Pediatric ACEs and Related Life Events Screener (PEARLS v2)

    Open Access•Meghan C Evans, Maryam Kia‐Keating et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child & Adolescent…•2025

Due to a demonstrated relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and a range of psychological, physical, and social risks, there has been a growing movement to integrate routine ACEs screening in pediatric settings. As screenings have increased, there has also been a call for research to uncover areas for improvement in the implementation of these screenings. The Pediatric ACEs and Related Life Events Screener (PEARLS) is one commo…

  • Associations Between Early-Life Adversity, Ambient Air Pollution, and Telomere Length in Children

Open Access•Rosemarie de la Rosa, Austin Le et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2024

OBJECTIVE: Examine the independent associations and interaction between early-life adversity and residential ambient air pollution exposure on relative buccal telomere length (rBTL). METHODS: Experiences of abuse, neglect, household challenges, and related life events were identified in a cross-sectional sample of children aged 1 to 11 years ( n = 197) using the 17-item Pediatric ACEs and Related Life Event Screener (PEARLS) tool. The PEARLS tool…

  • Biological Burden of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Children

Rosemarie de la Rosa, David Zablotny et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2023

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine relationships between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and related life events and allostatic load (AL)-"wear and tear" from chronic stress-in a pediatric population. METHODS: Children were screened with the PEdiatric ACEs and Related Life Event Screener (PEARLS) tool, a 17-item questionnaire capturing experiences of abuse, neglect, household challenges, and related life events. Biological data were avai…

  • A Caregiver-Child Intervention for Mitigating Toxic Stress (“The Resiliency Clinic”)

Open Access•Joan Jeung, Danielle Hessler Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2022

In conclusion, a group intervention teaching supportive caregiving and stress mitigation is feasible and acceptable for many families in an urban federally qualified health center (FQHC) with a signal for modest improvements in behavioral health. Future program iterations will seek to address participation barriers and expand the intervention's capacity to promote early relational health

  • Screening for Park Access during a Primary Care Social Determinants Screen

Open Access•Nooshin Razani, Dayna Long et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Clinical interventions to increase park access would benefit from an understanding of the social and economic adversity faced by patients

  • Community social and place predictors of sense of community

Open Access•D Adam Long, Dayna Long et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2007•Cited by: 38•References: 36

Sense of community (SOC) is empirically “unpacked” as a multilevel construct with place and social elements. SOC has been studied primarily at the individual level despite researchers acknowledging its effects at the community level. Little attention has been given to the roles of place and place attitudes in SOC. We argue that place and social are inextricably bound, and studying the impact of the social alone on community‐oriented constructs li…

  • Confirmatory factor analysis of the Sense of Community Index and development of a Brief SCI

Open Access•D Adam Long, Dayna Long et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2003•Cited by: 68•References: 31

The Sense of Community Index (SCI) is the most widely used measure of the construct, despite the lack of confirmation of its intended dimensions or subscales. Yet psychometric appraisals of the SCI have never used the proper tool for evaluating an established dimensional construct: confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The Block Booster Project data set (of residents of 47 street blocks in Brooklyn and Queens, New York) used in developing the origi…

  • Neighborhood Sense of Community and Social Capital

Douglas D Perkins, D Adam Long et al.•CHAPTER•Psychological Sense of Community•2002

  • Effects of Gender and Dress on Helping Behavior

Open Access•D Adam Long, Dayna Long et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1996

The effects of gender and dress on helping behavior were examined. Perceptions and feelings influencing decisions to help were also investigated in an exploratory manner. 128 subjects were asked by a male or female confederate for 37¢ and afterwards completed a questionnaire. The confederates were either well-dressed or sloppily dressed. Analysis indicated that the woman was helped more than the man but that well-dressed and sloppily dressed conf…
