Making the invisible visible
Stigma theory was used to examine the fears underlying the disclosure of a gay identity at work. Using a national sample of 534 gay, lesbian, and bisexual employees, this study examined the antecedents that affect the degree of disclosure of a gay identity at work and, for those who had not disclosed, the factors that influence their fears about full disclosure. Employees reported less fear and more disclosure when they worked in a group that was…
Odor Recognition and Identification
The effect of labels on recognition and identification of odors over time was assessed. 30 men and 30 women were presented 20 odors; half of the participants were also told a name for the odor as a label. Five min. and 60 min. later, all participants were given 20 odors (10 from the original set, 10 new) and asked whether each odor was new or old (odor recognition). The group given labels was also asked to recall the label provided (odor identifi…
Kolb'S Learning Style Theory Revisited
The use of nominal-level analysis of four primary learning styles (PLS) (i.e., doing, thinking, watching, and feeling), based on the Learning Style Inventory demonstrated their discriminant/convergent validity but not the validity of Kolb's learning style types (LST) (i.e., accommodator, diverger, converger, and assimilator). The LST typology is derived from the difference of two sets of ipsatively scored variables-a circumstance that contributes…
Factor Analysis of Ipsative Measures
lpsative measures are multiple measures, where the data are collected, or are modified, in such a way that all subject totals across the measures are equal. Much has been written about factor analysis with such data, however, no clear consensus has been reached regarding the suitability of ipsative measures for factor analysis. The purpose of the present article is to show analytically the fundamental problems that ipsative measures impose for fa…
Monte Carlo Comparisons of Three Tests for Homogeneity of Independent Correlations
A comparison of the power and Type I error rates of three tests of homogeneity for independent product-moment correlation coefficients (X;, Q, and LRS) were evaluated using Monte Carlo methods. Conditions simulated include data having varying sample sizes, reliabilities, and range restriction, with central and noncentral conditions, and having normal and nonnormal distributions. The LRS test almost always had a Type I error rate higher than the n…
Power and Accuracy of the Schmidt and Hunter Meta-Analytic Procedures
Many Monte Carlo studies have evaluated the Schmidt and Hunter (S&H) (1977) meta-analytic procedures for combining independent correlation coefficients and their 75% rule for testing the homogeneity of variance. This study is different in using simulated data that are more typical of those data sets included in meta-analyses (Cormwell, 1989) such that sample size, effect size, degree of range restriction, measurement error, and number of correlat…
Factor Analysis of the 1985 Revision of Kolb's Learning Style Inventory
Kolb's earlier (1976) Learning Style Inventory (LSI) has been criticized for its poor reliability and validity. Even after revisions (1985) were made and a new instrument was developed, the test-retest reliability remained low. Although construct validity of the original instrument has been often investigated, little work has been done on the revised version. In this study, the responses of 317 subjects who completed the LSI-1985 were factor anal…
Limited Information Parameter Estimates for Latent or Mixed Manifest and Latent Variable Models
We argue for separate analyses of the measurement and structural portions of latent or mixed manifest and latent variable models. We present limited information (single equation) procedures for estimating parameters in the structural portion of these models. These include parameter estimation procedures for recursive or nonrecursive relations, and procedures for testing zero-effect hypotheses. We then compare full and limited information estimate…
