  • Meta-Analysis of Fractional Flow Reserve Versus Quantitative Coronary Angiography and Noninvasive Imaging for Evaluation of Myocardial Ischemia

    Open Access•N M Swerdlow, Maria A C Christou et al.•ARTICLE•The American Journal of Cardiology•2007

We performed a meta-analysis of 31 studies comparing the results of fractional flow reserve (FFR) against quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) and/or noninvasive imaging of the same lesions. Studies were retrieved from PubMed (last search February 2006). Across 18 studies (1,522 lesions), QCA had a random effects sensitivity of 78% (95% confidence interval [CI] 67 to 86) and specificity of 51% (95% CI 40 to 61) against FFR (0.75 cutoff). Overa…

  • Greek Chronography in Roman Epic: The Calendrical Date of the Fall of Troy in the Aeneid

    Open Access•Anthony Grafton, A T Grafton et al.•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•1986•References: 1

The last chapter of Politian's first Miscellanea dealt with the amica silentia lunae through which the Greeks sailed back to Troy ( Aen. 2.255). He argued that the phrase should not be taken literally, as a statement that Troy fell at the new moon, but in an extended sense, as a poetic indication that the moon had not yet risen when the Greeks set sail. This reading had one merit: it explained how Virgil's moon could be silent while the Greeks we…

Technical chronology establishes the structure of calendars and the dates of events; it is, as it were, the foundation of history, particularly ancient history. The chronologer must know enough philology to interpret texts and enough astronomy to compute the dates of celestial phenomena, above all eclipses, which alone provide absolute dates. Joseph Scaliger, so we are told, was the first to master and apply this range of technical skills: Of the…
