  • A Beard Torn Off Is Twenty Shekels’ Worth…

Ilya Arkhipov, Leonid Kogan•ARTICLE•Journal of Cuneiform Studies•2026

Until recently, Assyriologists have been mostly unaware of the existence of prescriptive cuneiform law as early as in the Early Dynastic period. A deeper inquiry into the so-called chancery texts from Ebla has allowed Massimo Maiocchi and the present authors to independently conclude that compendia of prescriptive legal provisions, in their typology broadly identical to such well-known later codes as the Laws of Hammurabi, were produced (and, in …

  • More on the Lexicon and Grammar of the Ebla Chancery Texts

    Ilya Arkhipov, Leonid Kogan•ARTICLE•Altorientalische Forschungen•2025

In the present study the authors continue their previous work analyzing difficult lexemes attested in the so-called “chancery texts” from the Early Dynastic city-state of Ebla (in modern Syria). The newly suggested interpretations are important not only for one’s understanding of the earliest forms of East Semitic, but also for a proper comprehension of the exceedingly difficult texts in which they appear. For each lexeme, an exhaustive list of t…

  • Motion verbs and the ventive in the correspondence of Samsi-Addu, the king of Upper Mesopotamia (early eighteenth century bc)

Open Access•Ilya Arkhipov, Sergey Loesov•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2025•References: 8

The Akkadian ventive is now well understood as a marker that points to the location of the speech act participants. Nonetheless, there remain other domains of its usage which still need clarification. We endeavour to describe these domains of the ventive’s usage, relying upon a single-writer corpus of 178 Old Babylonian letters – those of Samsi-Addu, the king of Upper Mesopotamia (early eighteenth century bc ), which contains c. 500 tokens of the…

  • Corruption and Violence in Early Dynastic Mari (As Seen from Ebla)

Ilya Arkhipov, Leonid Kogan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2023

The tablet ARET 13, 15 was published in 2003 by Pelio Fronzaroli among other Eblaite "testi di cancelleria," providing a basis for studying the document. This edition was the first step toward understanding the text, establishing that it describes several episodes pertaining to Ebla's relations with Mari, its principal rival in eastern Syria, at the time of Yibbi-zikir, the last vizier of Early Dynastic Ebla. However, a number of difficulties rem…

  • The Ebla Chancery Texts in the Light of Recent Linguistic Research

    Ilya Arkhipov, Leonid Kogan•ARTICLE•Altorientalische Forschungen•2022

The article aims at establishing new, more reliable meanings and functions for a number of lexical and semi-grammatical elements of Eblaite (Syrian East Semitic). The so-called “chancery texts”, first published by Pelio Fronzaroli and Amalia Catagnoti as ARET 13, 16 and 18, are in the focus of the analysis. While feasible contextual interpretation is an absolute priority for the present authors, other (notably, comparative) methods are also used …

  • Two genitive constructions of Old Babylonian

Open Access•Ilya Arkhipov, Sergey Loesov•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2019•References: 7

The paper shows that there is a pattern in the distribution of synthetic (šēp šarrim"the king's foot") vs. analytical (kaspum ša awīlim"the boss's money") genitive constructions in Old Babylonian. The choice depends on the lexical feature of head nouns known as (in)alienability. Old Babylonian kinship and body part terms, as well as some other substantives, are "inalienable", which means they take only the synthetic construction. All other Old Ba…

  • Lexical notes on Mari letters

    Ilya Arkhipov•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und…•2018

The present paper identifies new attestations for, and revises the meanings of, some rare words and expressions that appear mainly in Mari letters: bazi ʔ itum ‘(a kind of) monkey’; bêšum ‘to explain, make clear’; ḫarāqum ‘to breach’; ina šārat waṣûm ‘to escape by a hair’s breadth’; kīsum ‘purse’; pāḫātum ‘responsibility’; rabbum ‘chief’; sagûm ‘to wander’; sakānum ‘to settle’; tabākum ‘to throw out’; tarākum ‘to hold aloft’
