Protecting the Dharma through Calligraphy in Tang China
Flying Heads : One Aspect of Sino-Asian Vampirism. Among the oddities of the foreign populations of Southeast Asia that are described in Chinese travel books starting from the 12th or the 14th century are beings whose heads fly off during the night to feast sometimes on fish or shellfish, and sometimes on human entrails, most especially those of women or small children. These bizarre practices, which the Chinese authors had great trouble explaini…
Although the existence of paper is attested in China by recent archaeological excavations linked to the Han dynasties (206 BC-220 AD), such discoveries remain very rare in Eastern Asia. Until recent times, the presence of paper was only confirmed in China. The oldest example known to date outside of the Chinese boundaries, and precisely dated between the end of the 1st century BC and the middle of the 1st century AD, has just been discovered by t…

This article falls into two parts. The first covers the printed book up to the middle of the 1 Oth century and the localities associated with the development of printing — especially Sichuan, for which we have many reports. The situation in Dunhuang or the capital is more complicated. From these places the data are sometimes contradictory. However, "this lack of evidence does not mean that xylography was not widespread in China before the 9th cen…

Les premières impressions des dhāranī de Mahāpratisarā
Textual elements of a printed dhāranī, found in Sichuan in 1944, have led some scholars to assert that it could have been printed in the middle of the eighth century. If this date is correct, then the dhāranī would be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, xylographed text. This article contests the early dating on the basis of the fact that there are several dhāranī of the same type found in Dunhuang and in central China, dated or undated, which …

Several collections of Dunhuang manuscripts have only in recent years come to the attention of scholars. We present here the contents of the additional holdings of the Peking National Library (more than 1,500 manuscripts), the collection in the Provincial Museum of Gansu (137 mss.) and the small collection held by the Xibei shifan xueyuan in Lanzhou (22 mss.)
