A note on clitic doubling in African and Creole languages
In this paper, I Would like to present a tentative analysis of cliti doubling in some African and creole languages. Consider, first, the case of Yoruba. Whenever a subject is cleft in Yoruba, a resumptive pronoun must be inserte in the position originally occupied by the cleft element. Clefting the subject of 3(a)yields 3 (b)or3(c

Serial Verbs and the Empty Category Principle in Krio
One of the principles of grammar introduced in Chomsky (1981) is the Empty Category Principle, which can be stated as follows: (i) [α e] must be properly governed. Proper government, as defined by Chomsky, is of two types (see footnote 2). First, there is proper government by a lexical category of the [±N±V] type. In (2a), for example, the empty category (e i ) is properly governed by the verb see , a lexical element of the [-N+V] type. Second, t…
Factitivity presupposition and the relativised predicate in Krio
After a brief review of the literature on factivity and presupposition, the paper examines a case of asymmetry in the interpretation of a construction known as the relativised predicate (RP). Whenever the main verb of the sentence with RP is mek (= 'make'), the sentence may be interpreted in two ways, including one with "the fact that". However, if the matrix verb is other than mek, there is only one interpretation possible-without "the fact that…

The relation between the middle tone and empty category principle violations in Krio
An examination of monosyllabic words in Krio reveals the existence of three distinct tones: high. mid and low. words of more than one syllable. However, only two tones are attested: high and low. The mid tone is, in fact, found only in monosyllabic forms in two very specific contexts: citation forms and sentence final forms. In other contexts. the mid tone ia replaced by the high tone. This suggests that the mid tone is merely a phonetic variant …
