  • Aquinas’s Argument for an Uncaused Cause

    Open Access•John Lamont, John R T Lamont•ARTICLE•New Blackfriars•2025

Aquinas presents his argument for the existence of an uncaused cause of all effects in his Second Way in the Summa theologiae as a deductively valid argument from premises known with certainty. This seems unwarranted, since the argument gives no reason for there being only one uncaused cause, and the reasons it gives for rejecting an endless causal regress seem unconvincing. These apparent shortcomings can be better understood by examining Aquina…

  • Stump and Swinburne on Revelation

    Open Access•John Lamont•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1996

In his important book Revelation: From Metaphor to Analogy , Richard Swinburne has proposed a comprehensive account of the nature of Christian revelation. This account has been criticized by Eleonore Stump. Stump has raised objections to Swinburne's views on biblical interpretation, and to his deistic view of revelation. I will argue that her objections to his views on biblical interpretation are ill-founded. Her criticism of a deistic conception…

  • Interaction of Anxiety and Note-Taking on Verbal Conditioning in Clinical Interviews

Open Access•Harold Gottlieb, Stuart Fischoff et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

Using 60 male psychiatric patients, the interaction between three levels of anxiety and note-taking as a reinforcer was explored within a verbal conditioning paradigm. Results showed a curvilinear relationship between anxiety and reinforcement with high-average anxiety subjects conditioning better than either high or low-average subjects This supported the authors' prediction and showed note-taking to be an effective reinforcer of verbal behavior…
