Solidarity, agency, and learning in everyday participation
The outbreak of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the world stage has impacted multiple aspects of our lives, affecting how we interact, organize public affairs, and carry out daily activities. This paper explores how students in an ongoing adult education program in Villa María, Argentina, continued their studies during the 2020–2022 pandemic in the context of the restrictive public health policies that led to suspending in‐person classes and collaborati…
“Don’t Tell Them What You Told Me”
This article examines how participants in literacy events mediate the validation and legitimacy of official documents. Through articulating the perspectives of literacy as a social practice, paperwork studies, and the analysis of administrative burdens, we argue that the value of official documents is unstable and can fluctuate between valid and invalid each time applicants and frontline workers redefine the context of use. Through ethnographic o…

The Turtle and the Fish in Latin America
If you had the opportunity to listen to Brian Street present a talk or read his work, the turtle and the fish will strike a familiar chord. Brian Street was an ethnographer, a literacy researcher, and an overall enthusiast about what human beings did and how they made sense of their worlds. He used the parable of the turtle and the fish to explain how what is familiar to us gets in the way of what is not, and the difficulties and often impossible…

Use before know-how
In recent years, the Secretariat of Public Education in Mexico has supplied a significant number of schools with computers and connectivity, putting important resources into the purchase and installation of equipment. It is assumed that teachers will somehow naturally transition to using these tools and in fact, new curricular guidelines derived from international policy put them under a great deal of pressure to do so. This paper presents an up-…
Literacy and Numeracy in Latin America
Latin American Literacy and Numeracy Studies (LALNS) are fairly unknown in other parts of the world. This book charts new directions in LALNS and explores the relationship between these studies and international perspectives. Calling upon social practice approaches, New Literacy Studies, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and other paradigms, the contributors identify both convergent and divergent literacy and numeracy issues within the region …
The Lettered Mountain
Simply put, The Lettered Mountain is a beautifully written book and a must read for those interested in multiple literacies, historiography, and ethnography, as well as colonial and contemporary Latin America. Rich in descriptive detail and analytically meticulous, Frank Salomon and Mercedes Niño- Murcia tell the story of one group’s orientations and practices toward writing, describing how a municipality in the Peruvian highlands has used symbol…
Extending traditional explanations of illiteracy
Providing a richer understanding of why the populations of economically underdeveloped countries are less literate than those who live in wealthier nations is the goal of this paper. Our analysis relies primarily on insights from our own research: ethnographic studies concerning literacy learning and use among unschooled and under‐schooled women conducted during the late 1990s in Mexico City and historical studies of literacy in Virginia, North C…

Learning to write in the street
In Mexico City there is a system of public scribes who function as written language brokers, composing letters, filling out forms, drawing up contracts, designing invitations or producing any other kind of written product that a client might require. The main question to be addressed in this paper is how the scribes learned their trade, and how they acquired the literacy practices and knowledge they need to make a living writing for others. The s…
Relearning to Earn
The use of remediation as a prerequisite for vocational education and job training has grown substantially--principally in community colleges, technical institutes, adult schools, and various job training programs. Furthermore, a rough "system" of remedial programs exists in most communities, with several levels of difficulty that lead to a General Education Diploma (GED) or college-level preparedness and with extensive referrals among programs. …
