    Author Qin Shouou's claim about the popularity of his work is hardly exaggerated.2 According to Chen Cunren, a long-time Shanghai resident and well-known scholar of traditional Chinese medicine, when the work was serialized in Shenbao between 1940-1941, it was so popular that he would hear passengers discussing it in buses and trams (Chen, 1975: 23-24).
