  • Height, weight and menarcheal age of schoolgirls in Oslo — an update

    Open Access•Knut Liestol, M Rosenberg•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1995

Every fifth year since 1920 measurements of height and weight of the school-children in Oslo have been centrally processed. We present updates obtained for girls in 1980 and 1985, and in addition results on menarche from 1985. The slow but steady post-war increase in height seems to approach a plateau. For body weight the downward post-war trend has been reversed. Menarcheal age was close to the stable level of about 13.3 years observed since 195…

  • Breast-feeding practice in Norway 1860–1984

Open Access•Knut Liestol, Margit Rosenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1988

Data from birth records with information on previously born children from three maternity hospitals in Norway have been used to study the trend in breast-feeding practice from 1860 to 1984. During the whole period, the percentage of women breast-feeding for at least 1 week was remarkably high, above 90%. The results show a fairly stable duration of breast-feeding up until 1920, at least 3 months in approximately 80% of the women. After that year,…

  • Lactation and post-partum amenorrhoea

Open Access•Knut Liestol, Margit Rosenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1988

Medical records from maternity clinics in three Norwegian cities, Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim, have been used to study the relationship between lactation and post-partum amenorrhoea during the period 1860–1964. Resumption of menses after a period of post-partum amenorrhoea has been examined separately during lactation, after cessation of lactation, and in the absence of lactation, in 5250 cases. During ongoing lactation the median duration of post…

  • Seasonal variations in menarche in Oslo

Open Access•Gro Harlem Brundtland, Knut Liestol•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1982

Data from about 11,000 girls aged 10-18 years were used to study seasonal variations in menarche in Oslo, Norway. A statistical method which takes into account the changes over time in the age-structure of the sample is used to show that throughout the period 1965-1970, the menarche incidence varied according to a stable bimodal seasonal pattern with peaks in December-January and July-August. This pattern corresponds to those observed in Sweden a…

  • Social conditions and menarcheal age

    Open Access•Knut Liestol•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1982

Data on the historical trends for menarcheal age and socio-economic conditions in Norway are used to investigate whether the reproductive system in humans is especially sensitive to environmental stimuli during any particular short age periods. The method which has been used is based on the irregularity in the trend for socio-economic development. These irregularities are reflected in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a quantity for which officia…

  • A note on the influence of factors early in development on later reproductive function

    Open Access•Knut Liestol•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1981

Historical trends for stillbirth rates in Norway are used to study the possible effect of suboptimal conditions early in life upon later reproductive function. A comparison of the trend for the stillbirth rate and the trend for mortality reveals some clear differences. While the mortality shows a steadily falling trend from the turn of the century, the stillbirth rates show a plateau from 1900-1910 to about 1935. Standardized stillbirth rates are…

  • Height, weight and menarcheal age of Oslo schoolchildren during the last 60 years

Open Access•Gro Harlem Brundtland, Knut Liestol et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1980

Every 5th year since 1920 the heights and weights of all Oslo schoolchildren (aged 7 to 18 years) have been measured, and the measurements processed centrally. For ages between 8 and 14 the mean height increased by about 4 cm per decade between 1920 and 1940 for both sexes. A drop of about 1.5 cm occurred during World War II, followed by a rapid catch-up. Since 1950, height has increased only moderately. A weight increase of between 1.5 kg (8 yea…

  • Menarcheal age in Oslo during the last 140 years

Open Access•J E Brudevoll, Knut Liestol et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1979

Data from maternity clinics have been used to study the trend in menarcheal age among girls born in Oslo after 1840. The investigation was based on recordings from approximately 50 women from each year. The women were divided into social categories according to their own or their husband's occupation. The results show a trend toward earlier maturation within the working class, which is characterized by two periods of rapid fall in menarcheal age.…
