Social Work and the Challenge of Entrepreneurship in Africa
One of the most difficult and challenging areas of research in social work practice is to create a philosophy of integration whereby some presumed assumptions are questioned and new areas of collaboration designed for best practices. It is the function of philosophy to question such assumptions and design newer areas of research for the practice in Africa. In this article, we have deigned to question the collaborative work of social work and entr…
The Mutuality of Challenges Facing Human Rights and Human Security
The interrelationship between Human Rights and “related fields” such as Human Security, Development, Democracy and Good Governance was emphasised at the United Nations Millennium Summit, which resulted in a declaration that affirmed global commitments to the protection of the vulnerable, the alleviation of poverty, and the rectification of corrupt structures and processes— particularly in those countries in which there is a lack of “rule of law” …
Partnership between the State and the Church
Social scientists studying African development have found themselves in a “paradigmatic crisis” (Ake, 2003: p. 17) in recent years, especially in the face of new challenges of development arising from the millenium development goals adopted by the United Nations. They have often posed the question—How can African development benefit from the MDGS, so that the African poor can attain the goals before 2015? This crisis needs to be properly contextu…
Re-Examining Religious Insecurity in the Africa State
This paper focuses on the emerging threats posed by the Boko Haram sect. It probes into its historical evolutions, highlights its causes and effects, and analyses its radicalisation into a violent extremist movement. It contends that the sect’s growing capacity to mount both “low-scale” and “lone” attacks demands that the Nigerian security forces and perhaps the international community begin to pay more attention to the emerging security challeng…

Ethicalization of Social Work and Socialization of Ethics―An African Challenge
Ethics in social work will be the extension of the philosophical work in the welfare discipline known as social work. The transformation of social work as a profession flows from the pleadings of social philosophy for a deeper humanitariannization and valuation of social work. It is the marriage of the wise ones with the kind ones. Philosophy being seen as a disciple that creates professionally wise ones while social work is seen as the disciplin…
The Church and Gender Equality in Africa
Pope John Paul II made a historic apology to several groups oppressed by the church since its inquisition started. The late pontiff’s apology to women as a group was as a result of the obnoxious and oppressive denial of women’s human right by the Church and the greater society because of the wrong interpretation of the “submission” clause in the Bible. The subsequent re-interpretation of the submission clause in the Letter to the Ephesians strong…
Poverty and Governance—A Critical Appraisal of a Philosophy and Practice of Development in Africa
The European postcolonial literature and global discourse about development concerns in Africa have witnessed a dominance of a development theory which has failed to capture the true aspirations, values and authentic problems of development confronting the people of Africa. This pro- western European theoretical framework bars African culture and values from being factored as motives, dynamics and outcomes that drive development on the continent.…
