  • Rethinking Interpretive Social Science From a Schutzian Perspective

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2026

Alfred Schutz, Phenomenology, and the Renewal of Interpretive Social Science By Besnik Pula (Routledge, 2024) Interpretative analyses are well established within the social sciences. Since the cultural turn, at the latest, there have been numerous efforts through which the world has been interpreted as text or, at times, made even more opaque. What has fallen by the wayside in the process is the relevance and status of subjective knowledge in the…

  • Gore content and refigured ethics

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Crime Media Culture An…•2026

This article examines ‘Gore Content’—online photos and videos of wounded, mutilated and dead bodies—through the lens of a refigured ethics that emerges between modern moral order and postmodern ambivalence. Drawing on an ongoing digital ethnography, it traces how smartphone capture, platform architectures and algorithmic circulation have normalised the availability of lethal imagery while fragmenting moral authority across fields such as journali…

  • Leben beenden.

  • How violence gains value

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Violence An International Journal•2025•References: 18

This article examines how violence gains value through communicative action, focusing on the distinction between prizing and appraisal as key processes of valuation. Drawing on John Dewey’s theory of valuation and communicative constructivism, it argues that violence is both a performative assertion of value and a subject of discursive negotiation. Using a case study of a racist attack, the study demonstrates that prizing occurs as an immediate, …

    Open Access•Jörg Schoolmann, Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Studies in Communication and Media•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 6

  • Contested Understandings of Violence

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Society•2024•References: 32

There are numerous conceptions of violence today, such as physical, psychological, emotional, structural, and epistemic. The question of which social phenomena are to be described as violence is itself a matter of furious dispute. In social theory, there is a widespread tendency to distinguish between 'modern' and 'postmodern' conceptions of violence. In this scheme, modern violence is primarily physical, while postmodern violence takes places ac…

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Soziale Passagen•2023

  • Communicative Action, Objectifications, and the Triad of Violence

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 35

This article aims to develop a social theory of violence that emphasizes the role of the third party as well as the communication between the involved subjects. For this Teresa Koloma Beck’s essay ‘The Eye of the Beholder: Violence as a Social Process’ is taken as a starting point, which adopts a social-constructivist perspective. On the one hand, the basic concepts and the benefits of this approach are presented. On the other hand, social-theore…

  • Hans Ruin

    Open Access•Ekkehard Coenen•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2020•References: 8

How can society be thought of as something in which the living and the dead interact throughout history? In Being with the Dead. Burial, Ancestral Politics, and the Roots of Historical Consciousness, Hans Ruin turns to the relationship between the living and the dead as well as ‘historical consciousness’. He is referring to the expression ‘being with the dead’ (Mitsein mit dem Toten). Rather en passant, Martin Heidegger (1962: 282) shaped this ex…
