How do flood risk–socioeconomic interactions influence household income dynamics in shrinking cities of the Rust Belt in the US
Media Attributions and Public's Responses to Russia–Ukraine War
Objective Based on Weiner's attribution model, this research examined how attributions regarding an international conflict (e.g., Russia‐Ukraine war) lead to the public's responses (e.g., helping vs. punishment), mediated by their emotions toward nations (e.g., Russia vs. Ukraine) and individuals (e.g., Russians vs. Ukrainians). Methods In Study 1, we conducted a content analysis of 253 news articles about Russia‐Ukraine war that were published i…
The Gaps in Health-Adjusted Life Years (Hale) by Income and Region in Korea
This study aims to calculate the health-adjusted life years (HALE) by using years lived with disability (YLD) from the national claims data, as well as to identify the differences and inequalities in income level and region. The study was carried out on total population receiving health insurance and medical benefits. We calculated incidence-based YLD for 260 disease groups, and used it as the number of healthy years lost to calculate HALE. We ad…
Subnational Burden of Disease According to the Sociodemographic Index in South Korea
The sociodemographic index (SDI), a composite index per capita income, educational attainment, and total fertility rate in a country, can indicate whether the country's burden of disease varies depending upon its level of socioeconomic development. This study identified the subnational SDI and disease burden of South Korea based on the country's overall SDI, using national representative data. The burden of disease was measured using disability-a…
Associations Between Private Health Insurance and Medical Care Utilization for Musculoskeletal Disorders
In South Korea, people may increase their medical coverage by purchasing private health insurance to augment low coverage provided by the National Health Insurance (NHI). Frequent and excessive use of medical care by those with private health insurance is an issue, especially for musculoskeletal disorders that require excessive care and contribute to moral hazard. In South Korea, since private health insurance is structurally linked to the scope …
Burden of Disease in Coastal Areas of South Korea
In this study, the coastal areas of South Korea carry a higher burden than the national population. Additionally, chronic diseases compose the majority of the health burden in coastal areas. Despite the limitation of data, YLD was the best tool available for evaluating the health outcomes in specific areas, and has the advantage of simplicity and timely analysis
Analysis of the Effect of the Elderly’s Labor Status on Care Cost at the End of Life
This study quantitatively analyzes the effects of employment patterns at the time of death of the elderly on the utilization of medical care before death using the cohort data from the National Health Insurance Corporation, controlling mortality to obtain more accurate results. Gender was coded as 0 for males and 1 for females, and average monthly household income was taken as a logarithm to approximate a normal distribution. Care cost at the end…
Estimates of the global, regional, and national morbidity, mortality, and aetiologies of lower respiratory infections in 195 countries, 1990–2016
BACKGROUND: Lower respiratory infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study 2016, provides an up-to-date analysis of the burden of lower respiratory infections in 195 countries. This study assesses cases, deaths, and aetiologies spanning the past 26 years and shows how the burden of lower respiratory infection has changed in people of all ages. MET…
Global Burden of Hypertension and Systolic Blood Pressure of at Least 110 to 115 mm Hg, 1990-2015
Importance: Elevated systolic blood (SBP) pressure is a leading global health risk. Quantifying the levels of SBP is important to guide prevention policies and interventions. Objective: To estimate the association between SBP of at least 110 to 115 mm Hg and SBP of 140 mm Hg or higher and the burden of different causes of death and disability by age and sex for 195 countries and territories, 1990-2015. Design: A comparative risk assessment of hea…
Influences of socioeconomic factors on childhood and adolescent overweight by gender in Korea
There is an inverse association between parental SES variables and the overweight status of children and adolescents. Additionally, parental body shape is an important factor that influences childhood and adolescent overweight
