  • Countervailing Market Power and Hospital Competition

Eric Barrette, Gautam Gowrisankaran et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2022

While economic theories indicate that market power by downstream firms can potentially counteract market power upstream, antitrust policy is opaque as to whether to incorporate countervailing market power in merger analyses. We use detailed national claims data from the health care sector to evaluate whether countervailing insurer power does indeed limit hospitals' exercise of market power. We estimate willingness-to-pay models to evaluate hospit…

  • Impacts of Unionization on Quality and Productivity: Regression Discontinuity Evidence from Nursing Homes

    Open Access•Aaron Sojourner, Aaron J Sojourner et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 37

Using a regression discontinuity design, the authors of this article examine the effects of nursing home unionization on several labor, establishment, and consumer outcomes. • Trends in Unionization of Nursing Homes

Open Access•Aaron Sojourner, Aaron J Sojourner et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2010

Unionization may have important implications for the delivery of nursing home care, but little is known about this phenomenon. Since 1985, the proportion of nursing home workers covered by union contracts declined from 14.6% to 9.9%. The first national-scale data on facility-level unionization reveals that unions are more common in nursing homes with more residents, in hospital-based or chain-affiliated facilities, and in facilities serving a hig…

  • Hospital Advertising in California, 1991–1997

Open Access•Robert J Town, Robert Town et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2002

This paper examines the advertising behavior of California hospitals from 1991 to 1997. Using highly detailed hospital-level information, we found that hospital advertising in California increased dramatically: annual spending on advertising grew (inflation adjusted) more than sixfold over the period. In addition, advertising expenditures varied significantly across hospitals. We found that hospital advertising increased with market concentration…
