Trust and Envy: The Political Economy of Business Groups in Developing Countries
Modelling the demand for foreign savings in developing countries: Testing a hypothesis with Latin American data
The demand for foreign savings is an important feature of the economy in many LDCs, and it would be helpful to have a better understanding of its determinants. This paper considers one approach to modelling the demand for foreign savings in LDCs. If the demand for investment shifts out more buoyantly than does the supply of domestic saving in response to current macro‐economic conditions, persistent demand for foreign savings will be generated as…

A Simultaneous-Equations Model of Savings in Developing Countries
Postwar experience has confirmed the central importance of domestic savings rates for capital accumulation and other goals in developing countries. Consequently, both for analytical and for policy purposes, it would be helpful to estimate savings functions which are grounded in economic theory and whose parameters are properly identified and free from simultaneous-equations bias. Accordingly, we have formulated a simultaneous-equations model of a…
Long-Term Viability of Slavery in a Backward Closed Economy
Long-Term Viability of Slavery in a Backward Closed Economy As in other areas, professional views in economic history are often based on a few outstanding case studies. As brilliant as these may be, however, the circumstances present in those instances may be special, so that the same model estimated in different conditions would lead to very different results. For example, since Conrad and Meyer's pathfinding paper, the impression may have been …
Tropical Trade and Development in the Nineteenth Century: The Brazilian Experience
Nurkse's classical analysis of nineteenth-century trade and development dealt largely with the temperate-zone countries. Why the tropical countries remained "outsiders" to this process is not clearly understood. In an effort to substitute historical analysis for the a priori explanations which have been popular in this area, the present paper presents data and analysis on international trade and its effects on income growth, structural change, an…
Economic Retardation in Nineteenth-Century Brazil
U UNLIKE the United States and the other regions of recent settlement, nineteenth-century Brazil did not develop as an characterized by relatively high wages. At first appearance this may seem surprising, for Brazil also had an abundance of land and high land-labour ratios, and might have been expected to follow a similar course with respect to productivity and to the distribution of income. Apart from its interest for students of comparative eco…

Economic Development Through Bureaucratic Corruption
Among scholars the subject of corruption is nearly taboo. Placing it in a model of developing economy as a developing factor is even worse in some eyes. No doubt, Nathaniel H. Leff's analysis will be misunderstood. So be it. It still bids us to understand an important area of social behavior, and tells us why public policies will fail. The author is at Harvard University

Long-term Brazilian Economic Development
The Purpose of this article is to clarify some historical features of Brazilian economic development in order to gain some insight into the process of long-term growth. The recent extension of the principal macroeconomic time-series to 1920 and the publication of several specialized monographs provide the material for such an analysis. We will begin with a consideration of the timing of Brazilian industrialization and, more important, of the cond…
