Japanese and French specificational sentences with left-dislocation and the questions they induce
This study examines the nature of questions induced in Japanese and French specificational sentences with left-dislocation. Despite their superficial similarities, the two constructions show the following differences. In Japanese, such constructions are almost exclusively found in monologic discourse, where the speaker speaks one-sidedly; a clear pause is required after the dislocated item, whose head is a lexical noun. In contrast, the French co…
Group participation and the risk of functional decline in later life
Although group participation benefits older adults' health, its effects may vary by group type. The Japanese Health and Welfare Co-operative (Hew Co-op) organises peer-led group participation called 'Han Kai' meetings to promote health literacy, but the impact of Han Kai participation on health indicators remains unexplored. This study aimed to examine whether the frequency and duration of Han Kai participation were associated with risk of functi…

METHODS: The team responsible for developing the new 'Generalism' section of the 2022 revision of the Model Core Curriculum for Medical Education in Japan (MCC) consisted of nine members from diverse medical backgrounds across Japan. We adopted pragmatism paradigm and analyzed to identify decisi…
Two past forms inducing conjectural or non-intrusive questions
This study argues that conjectural or non-intrusive questions are not only conveyed by future forms, as often discussed, but may be induced, combined with contextual factors, by past forms. Conjectural and non-intrusive questions are, respectively, uttered when the addressee is assumed as ignoring the answer and when she isn’t forced to answer. What is claimed to be conjectural or non-intrusive includes i) polite questions involving the French ma…
Associations of Patient Experience in Primary Care With Hospitalizations and Emergency Department Visits on Isolated Islands
PURPOSE: In rural areas, the management of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits is an important issue, and it is compounded by factors such as the long distance to secondary care facilities, funding difficulties in many rural medical institutions, and shortage of medical staff. While better patient experience (PX) has been shown to reduce hospitalizations and ED visits, previous studies have not considered the differences between…
[2]a John-ga John-Nom nani-o QUOI –Acc kat- ta- acheter-Pas- [no-] ka. [Comp]-KA (idem. 98) [2]b John a acheté quoi ? [3]a dare-ka- ga QU…
