Prevalence, trends and inequalities of childhood undernutrition according to a Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (Ciaf)
Socio-ecological determinants of multiple anthropometric failures among under-five children
The composite index of anthropometric failure (CIAF) offers a comprehensive measure of the overall burden of undernutrition in children, extending beyond the traditional anthropometric indices to better capture the co-occurrence of multiple anthropometric deficits. Despite its growing use, evidence on the determinants of CIAF remains fragmented and inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify and synthesize the determi…
Perceived stigma and the role of BMI on perceived HIV-related stigma among people living with HIV/Aids in Southeast Ethiopia
The prevalence of perceived HIV-related stigma was found high. Patients with poor social support and non-adherent to HAART were more likely to suffer from HIV-related perceived stigma. Our findings suggest that there is a relationship between body mass index and perceived HIV-related stigma, while depression can indirectly predict perceived HIV-related stigma
Understanding HIV-Related Mental Health Challenges and Contributing Factors Among Indonesian Adolescents Living with HIV
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has disproportionately affected various population groups, including adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV). In many contexts, ALHIV have been reported to experience mental health issues following their HIV diagnosis. However, there is a limited understanding of the mental health issues faced by ALHIV in Indonesia and the various contributing factors globally. This study aimed to explore the mental health challenge…
Determinants of aggregate anthropometric failure among children under-five years in Ethiopia
Undernutrition significantly contributes to failure to thrive in children under five, with those experiencing multiple forms of malnutrition facing the highest risks of morbidity and mortality. Conventional markers such as stunting, wasting, and underweight have received much attention but are insufficient to identify multiple types of malnutrition, prompting the development of the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) and the Composit…
Co-existence of maternal overweight/obesity, child undernutrition, and anaemia among mother-child pairs in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is currently known to be the most food-insecure country in sub-Saharan Africa, where childhood undernutrition remains endemic. While attention is increasingly being paid to childhood undernutrition in Ethiopia, a current surge of "triple burden of malnutrition" (TBM) has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of TBM and identify the associated factors in Ethiopia. Data were from the Ethiopian D…
The Hidden Hunger among Nepalese Non-Pregnant Women Aged 15–49 Years
Micronutrient deficiencies remain a public health burden among non-pregnant women in developing countries, including Nepal. Hence, this study examined micronutrient deficiencies among non-pregnant Nepalese women aged 15-49 using the 2016 Nepal National Micronutrient Status Survey (NNMSS). Data for 2143 non-pregnant women was extracted from the 2016 NNMSS. The study analysed the levels of ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), red blood ce…
Childhood undernutrition mediates the relationship between open defecation with anemia among Ethiopian children
Open defecation showed a significant direct effect on anemia. Child undernutrition remarkably mediated the relationship between OD and anemia that further magnified the effect. This finding has an important programmatic implication calling for strengthened, accelerated and large-scale implementation of strategies to end open defecation and achieve universal access to sanitation in Ethiopia
Household environment associated with anaemia among children aged 6–59 months in Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, about fifty percent of children suffer from childhood anemia, making it a serious public health issue. Open defecation is a major contributing factor to this scourge. To address this issue effectively, it is recommended to strengthen initiatives aimed at eliminating open defecation that involve various approaches, including sanitation infrastructure development, behavior change campaigns, and policy interventions. In addition, to red…
Concurrent wasting and stunting among under‐five children in the context of Ethiopia
Concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt) is a condition where both wasting and stunting exist in a child at the same time. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of WaSt and to identify potential associated factors in Ethiopia. A total of 33,650 children aged between 0 and 59 months were included in the analysis from the four waves of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. A mixed-effects logistic regression model was used to identify the …
Coexistence of Anaemia and Stunting among Children Aged 6–59 Months in Ethiopia
One in four preschool-age children in Ethiopia had co-morbid anaemia and stunting, which is a significant public health problem. Future interventions to reduce CAS in Ethiopia should target those children perceived to be small at birth, anaemic mothers, and mothers with short stature
Differential Associated Factors for Inadequate Receipt of Components and Non-Use of Antenatal Care Services among Adolescent, Young, and Older Women in Nigeria
Nigerian women continue to die in childbirth due to inadequate health services such as antenatal care (ANC). Among other factors, the inadequate receipt or non-use of ANC appears to be associated with the age of women, remoteness, and poor households. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the factors associated with inadequate receipt of the components and non-use of ANC among pregnant adolescents, and young and older women in Nigeria. Data…
Gender-specific disaggregated analysis of childhood undernutrition in Ethiopia
Our study revealed that boys were more likely to be malnourished than girls, regardless of their age category, and there were variations in the factors determining undernutrition among boys and girls. The differences in the burden of undernutrition were significant and alarming, positioning Ethiopia to be questioned whether it will meet the set Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 of zero hunger by 2030. These findings call for m…
Association between water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) and child undernutrition in Ethiopia
The present study confirms that the quality of access to sanitation and housing conditions affects child linear growth indicators. Besides, household sources of drinking water did not predict the occurrence of either wasting or stunting. Further longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to determine whether individual and joint access to WASH facilities was strongly associated with child stunting and wasting
Maternal Health Care Seeking Behavior for Neonatal Danger Signs and Associated Factors Among Post-Partum Mothers in Southeast Ethiopia
Early health care seeking could save neonates' lives and have a significant role in decreasing neonatal death, while delayed health care seeking has many contributions to neonatal mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to assess maternal health-seeking behavior for neonatal danger signs and associated factors among postpartum mothers in Southeast Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 400 women with …
Utilization of Health Facility–Based Delivery Service Among Mothers in Gindhir District, Southeast Ethiopia
Facility-based delivery service is recognized as intermediation to reduce complications during delivery. Current struggles to reduce maternal mortality in low-and-middle income countries, including Ethiopia, primarily focus on deploying skilled birth attendants and upgrading emergency obstetric care services. This study was designed to assess utilization of health facility-based delivery service and associated factors among mothers who gave birth…
Unsafe child feces disposal status in Ethiopia
Three in four Ethiopian children feces disposed of unsafely. Household and socio-demographic factors, such as access to improved toilet facility, the child's age (older age), and both higher maternal and paternal education levels were important factors that significantly associated with lower odds of unsafe child feces disposal
Prevalence and associated factors of safe and improved infant and young children stool disposal in Ethiopia
The prevalence of safe and improved child stool disposal in Ethiopia was found to be very low. Household socio-demographic and economic determinate were the key factors associated with child stool disposal. Appropriate strategic interventions to ensure safe and improved child stool disposal in Ethiopia is necessary. In addition, integrating child stool management into the existing sanitation interventions programs should be strongly recommended
