Open Access•Abir Abdel Rahman, Nada Kassem et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2025

Over the last 30 years, there has been a continuing global shift in eating patterns and associated behaviors toward the consumption of foods and beverages rich in refined sugars in developed and undeveloped countries. The behavior of adding sugar to milk and other beverages has been observed as a major underlying factor in developing countries, including the Eastern Mediterranean Region. This qualitative study fills a knowledge gap by exploring t…

  • Adding sugar to children’s beverages

Open Access•Abir Abdel Rahman, Nada Kassem et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2024

This study, guided by the theory of planned behavior (TPB), aimed to investigate whether attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control can predict parents’ intentions to reduce or stop adding sugar to their child’s beverages, such as tea or milk. The research also seeks to determine the predictive power of the TPB on the actual behavior of parents in reducing or halting sugar intake in their children’s drinks. A questionnaire was d…

Furthermore, concurrent use of WPT and cigarettes is more harmful than cigarette or WPT smoking alone. These data may help inform the public and policy-makers about the dangers of WPT smoking and dual use of tobacco products

Nada Kassem, Nada O F Kassem et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2018

Objectives: We examined college students' beliefs and behavior regarding sharing when smoking a hookah, a practice that may involve substantial risk of disease transmission. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional Web-based survey of undergraduate ever users of hookah (N = 970) at a US university in 2007. Results: Hookah sharing started at initiation of hookah use. The first-time participants smoked hookah, 96.9% shared it, and 97.5% were with …

  • Arab-American Hookah Smokers

Nada Kassem, Nada O F Kassem et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2015

Early and late initiation of hookah tobacco use warrant prevention programs targeting the youth and older adults in communities, colleges, and middle and high schools that include health education campaigns, and encouragement of voluntary smokefree home rules. Tobacco control policies aimed to prevent initiation of hookah use should include regulation of hookah tobacco flavors, and should target the physical environments in neighborhoods, especia…

  • Hookah Smoking and Facilitators/Barriers to Lounge Use among Students at a US University

Nada Kassem, Nada O F Kassem et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2015

Youth are vulnerable to experimenting with hookah tobacco smoking. Hookah lounges provide patrons the opportunity to smoke hookah tobacco with smoker and non-smoker friends in entertaining settings. Our findings suggest that zoning laws and anti-hookah smoking legislation may help curb hookah uptake by prohibiting hookah lounges from opening in close proximity to universities, reducing the density of hookah lounges in cities, and raising the admi…
