  • Prevalence of high 10-year cardiovascular risk among the general population in Malaysia and the associated factors: A nationwide community-based study in 2023

Open Access•Kim Sui Wan, Muhammad Fadhli Mohd Yusoff et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The prevalence of high 10-year CVD risk among the general adult population in Malaysia is high. Lower education level, sleep inadequacy, physical inactivity, and fatty liver are independent factors associated with a high 10-year CVD risk. Health policymakers, programme managers, and clinicians should screen, identify, and treat people with a high 10-year CVD risk to prevent cardiovascular complications

  • The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and the associated factors in a multiethnic upper-middle-income country in Asia: Findings from a nationwide community-based study in 2023

Open Access•Kim Sui Wan, Muhammad Fadhli Mohd Yusoff et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

MetS is highly prevalent in Malaysia and represents a pressing public health issue. Concerted multisectoral strategies are needed to manage this epidemic, and precise public health interventions can be targeted at the identified high-risk subpopulations for more effective and efficient outcomes

  • Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Open Access•Nowell H Phelps, Rosie Singleton et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…

Open Access•Wan Shakira Rodzlan Hasani, Kamarul Imran Musa et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The semi-parametric and parametric survival models both highlight the considerable impact of socioeconomic status and modifiable risk factors on premature CVD mortality, underscoring the imperative for targeted interventions to effectively mitigate these effects

  • Findings from a Nationwide Study on Alcohol Consumption Patterns in an Upper Middle-Income Country

Open Access•Tania Gayle Robert Lourdes, Hamizatul Akmal Abd Hamid et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for various diseases, especially non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries. The reduction of the harmful use of alcohol is mentioned in Target 3.5 of the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG). This study aimed to determine factors associated with current alcohol drinking among Malaysians aged 15 years and above. Data from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019, a cross-sectional nationwide su…

  • The Role of Media and Retailer Message Recall on Malaysian Male Perceptions of E-Cigarette Use: The 2016 National Study of E-Cigarettes Prevalence

Open Access•Lei Hum Wee, Guat Hiong Tee et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2022

This study examined the perceptions of current smokers on electronic cigarette (EC) use, after exposure to information on EC use and its potential harms from various media and retail outlets. This cross-sectional study is a sub-analysis of the National Study of Electronic Cigarettes Prevalence (N = 4289) using the multi-stage stratified sampling method. Respondents were interviewed face-to-face by a trained data collector using a structured quest…

  • Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: A pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants

    Open Access•Bin Zhou, Rodrigo M Carrillo-Larco et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2021

BACKGROUND: Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blo…

  • Self-Reported Modifiable Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease among Older Adults in Malaysia: A Cross-Sectional Study of Prevalence and Clustering

Open Access•Ying Ying Chan, Norhafizah Sahril et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The co-occurrence of multiple modifiable risk factors increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity or mortality. This study examines the prevalence and clustering of self-reported modifiable CVD risk factors among older adults in Malaysia. A total of 7117 adults aged ≥50 years participated in the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2018: Elderly Health, a community-based cross-sectional survey. Data were collected using a …

  • Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories: A pooled analysis of 2181 population-based studies with 65 million p…

    Open Access•Andrea Rodriguez-Martinez, Andrea Rodriguez‐Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents. METHODS: For this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease …

  • Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults

Open Access•NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, Honor Bixby et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2019

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities 1,2 . This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity 3–6 . Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean B…

  • Worldwide trends in blood pressure from 1975 to 2015: A pooled analysis of 1479 population-based measurement studies with 19·1 million participants

Open Access•Bin Zhou, James Bentham et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Raised blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease. We estimated worldwide trends in mean systolic and mean diastolic blood pressure, and the prevalence of, and number of people with, raised blood pressure, defined as systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or higher or diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher. METHODS: For this analysis, we pooled national, subnational, or comm…
