  • On Editing Medical Fragments from the Cairo Geniza

    Gerrit Bos•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2021•References: 1

A reliable edition of medical fragments in Hebrew and/or Arabic script from the Cairo Geniza, especially those dealing with pharmacology, can only be accomplished if the editors are trained in medieval Judeo-Arabic, Arabic philology, and paleography and have a thorough knowledge of all the secondary sources and studies. Allowing too many faulty readings otherwise, editions of these fragments cannot be considered credible

  • An Epitome of Galen's on the Elements Ascribed to Ḥunayn Ibn Isḥāq

Gerrit Bos, Y Tzvi Langermann•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2015

Galen's On the Elements according to Hippocrates is an important source for physical doctrines circulating in late antiquity. The variety of atomistic doctrines that Galen brings into the discussion, as well as his arguments aimed at refuting them, were closely studied by the early kalām atomists. Of particular interest are the summaries of this text, which seem to have been written many centuries after Galen; some of them are products of early I…

Ha-Maamar be-Qaddaat ha-dever (Treatise on Pestilential Fever), composed by an anonymous author, is one of several treatises devoted to the subject of plague that exist in Hebrew literature. • Maimonides on Medicinal Measures and Weights, from his Galenic Epitomes

    Gerrit Bos•ARTICLE•Aleph•2009

Some of the personal comments inserted by Maimonides in his epitomes of Galen's Qātāgānas (De compositione medicamentorum per genera) and Mayāmir (De compositione medicamentorum secundum locos) are discussed. The most valuable of these comments, which have neither been edited nor studied to date, is undoubtedly a lengthy and detailed discussion of medicinal weights and measures employed in Galen and subsequent medical literature. • The Literature of Hebrew Medical Synonyms: Romance and Latin Terms and their Identification

    Gerrit Bos, Guido Mensching•ARTICLE•Aleph•2005

This paper surveys several medico-botanical synonym lists that have not been described adequately in the bibliographical literature so far. In much of the existing literature and many catalogues, the specific Romance language is usually either not identified or misidentifi…

When this faculty is affected by a disturbance of the balance of the four bodily humours, i.e., by too much moisture and/or coldness of the brain, forgetfulness will be the result. One way to treat this affliction is to restore the humoral balance by administering warm drugs. A popular but also …
