Aus altsüdarabischer Korrespondenz: Wie man einem Grabräuber auf die Schliche kommt
Correspondence by letter from Ancient South Arabia is still belonging to the most intricate fields in Semitic philology. Although the grammatical structure of particularly the Sabaic language is meanwhile fairly well understood, its lexical substance is far from being adequately accessible due to the still rather modest amount of sources. By early March 2024, about 5.200 Sabaic lexemes have been identified by the digital Sabaic dictionary project…
Vom Altäthiopischen zu den neuäthiopischen Sprachen
Die altäthiopischen Personalpronomina der dritten Person Plural in der Funktion als Kopula
Gəʿəz (Classical Ethiopic) has two sets of personal pronouns in the plural. This paper offers a mainly statistical analysis that demonstrates that the two sets are free variants – however of rather different occurrence – without a recognizable functional differentiation

The Semitic Languages: An International Handbook
The Handbook of Semitic Languages offers a comprehensive reference tool for Semitic Linguistics in its broad sense. It is not restricted to comparative Grammar, although it covers also comparative aspects, including classification. By comprising a chapter on typology and sections with sociolinguistic focus and language contact, the conception of the book aims at a rather complete, unbiased description of the state of the art in Semitics. Articles…
Sounds of Gǝʿǝz – How to Study the Phonetics and Phonology of an Ancient Language
The phonology belongs to the basic structures of a language. Knowing the sounds of the phonemes of a language is essential for the grammar, etymology or classification of a given language. For ancient languages (extinct or classical), phonology is always problematic, for obvious reasons. In this paper, various approaches are evaluated and combined that can shed light on how Gəʿəz might have sounded in Aksumite times: transcriptions in contemporar…
Eine unvollendete sabäische Urkunde
A certificate concerning a transaction in cereal, inscribed in wood, and in Sabaean language is discussed here. The text was never completed. At the beginning of the text at least two words are missing. The reason was probably a mistake in line 2. Of particular interest is the dating. An eponym is mentioned, who was a contemporary of Šā'irum Awtar. It can be assumed that the text was written in the early 3 rd ct. A.D
