The hard problem of intertheoretic comparisons
A modesty proposal
Normative Uncertainty without Theories
How should an agent act under normative uncertainty? We might extend the orthodox theory of rational choice to the case of uncertainty between competing normative theories. But this requires that the values assigned by different normative theories be comparable. This paper defends a strategy for avoiding the need for intertheoretic value comparisons: instead of comparing competing moral theories, I argue that values can be represented in terms of…

Jennifer Thigpen. Island Queens and Mission Wives: How Gender and Empire Remade Hawaiʻi’s Pacific World
In Island Queens and Mission Wives: How Gender and Empire Remade Hawaiʻi’s Pacific World, Jennifer Thigpen zeroes in on the relationship between the wives of Congregationalist missionaries and the women of the Hawaiian aliʻi, or royalty, during a relatively short timeframe from 1820 to 1853, the years that the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions officially sanctioned the Hawaiian missions. Thigpen argues that relationships betwee…
Hawaiian Music in Motion: Mariners, Missionaries, and Minstrels
This book explores the performance, reception, transmission, and adaptation of Hawaiian music on board ships and in the islands, revealing the ways both maritime commerce and imperial confrontation facilitated the circulation of popular music in the nineteenth century. The book shows how Hawaiians initially used music and dance to ease tensions with, and spread information about, potentially dangerous foreigners, and then traces the circulation o…

Durham: Duke University Press, 2012. When Americans hear the word “hula,” we usually think of tourist shows featuring comely young women in cellophane skirts and bras made of coconut shells. In academia, our instinct is usually to reject these images as simulacra, as the fraudulent…

We do have a process to approximate deletion which we follow only in rare cases where the DOI has been genuinely created in error, and most crucially, if the DOI has never been published anywhere online or in print and never otherwise distributed to or communicated with anyone (autho…
Leaders and Leadership
The Changing Public Service: Looking Back…Moving Forward
Had I been more prescient, I might have been an elder statesman of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) myself, because I was at the meetings in 1939 of the American Political Science Association at which the organization meetings took place. I also attended the meeting the second day. This I did to hear one of the distinguished seniors at that time, Charles Beard, who made a memorable address beginning with a booming Fellow trav…
