  • Entrepreneurial stakeholder enrollment

Open Access•Nicolai Juul Fo, Nicolai J Foss et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2026

Knightian uncertainty is central to entrepreneurship. While the entrepreneurship literature has carefully investigated the implications of uncertainty for entrepreneurial decision-making, less is known about how uncertainty affects the entrepreneur’s ability to mobilize stakeholders in support of a new venture. Entrepreneurs and potential stakeholders, notably funders, often hold different subjective beliefs about future possibilities and their l…

  • Microfoundations of entrepreneurial ecosystems

Open Access•Angelo Cavallo, Angelo Farias Cavallo et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2026

Research on entrepreneurial ecosystems has expanded rapidly over the past two decades, generating substantial insights into their constituent elements and associated outcomes. However, the microfoundational mechanisms through which these elements and outcomes interact across levels of analysis remain poorly understood, limiting theoretical progress in the entrepreneurial ecosystems literature. This paper offers a critical examination of existing …

  • Uncertainty versus urgency

Open Access•Magne S Angelshaug, Tina Saebi et al.•ARTICLE•Technological Forecasting and…•2025

Firms' efforts to employ more diverse top management teams raise the question of whether diversity helps or hinders business model innovation (BMI) in response to two situations that managers frequently encounter: uncertainty (such as a turbulent, unpredictable environment) and urgency (such as poor financial performance). We contend that while a diverse top management team with a wide range of expertise and ideas to draw from may seem well equip…

  • Developing Sustainable Business Models

    Open Access•Kristin Ringvold, Tina Saebi et al.•ARTICLE•Organization & Environment•2023

Sustainable business models (SBMs) integrate economic with social and/or environmental value creation. Many relevant aspects of organizing for sustainable business model innovation (SBMI) have yet to be accounted for to understand how firms can add a new SBM to their already existing portfolio of business models. Specifically, how the development of a new SBM is influenced by managers’ cognitions, capabilities, behaviors, and interactions, and ho…

  • Business Model Innovation

Nicolai Juul Fo, Nicolai J Foss et al.•BOOK•Business Model Innovation•2015•Cited by: 1

Business model innovation is an important source of competitive advantage and corporate renewal. An increasing number of companies have to innovate their business models, not just because of competitive forces but also because of the ongoing change from product-based to service-based business models. Yet, business model innovation is also a massive organizational change process that challenges existing processes, structures and modes of control. …

  • Microfoundations of Routines and Capabilities

Open Access•Teppo Felin, Nicolai Juul Fo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Management Studies•2012

This article introduces the Special Issue and discusses the microfoundations of routines and capabilities, including why a microfoundations view is needed and how it may inform work on organizational and competitive heterogeneity. Building on extant research, we identify three primary categories of micro‐level components underlying routines and capabilities: individuals, social processes, and structure. We discuss how these components, and their …

  • Economic freedom and entrepreneurial activity

    Open Access•Christian Bjørnskov, Nicolai Juul Fo et al.•ARTICLE•Public Choice•2008•Cited by: 13•References: 31

While much attention has been devoted to analyzing how the institutional framework and entrepreneurship impact growth, how economic policy and institutional design affect entrepreneurship appears to be much less analyzed. We try to explain cross-country differences in the level of entrepreneurship by differences in economic policy and institutional design. Specifically, we use the Economic Freedom Index from the Fraser Institute to ask which elem…

  • Institutions as knowledge capital

    Nicolai Juul Fo, N J Foss et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Economics•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 15

This article revisits the socioeconomic theory of the Austrian School economist Ludwig M. Lachmann. By showing that the common claim that Lachmann’s idiosyncratic (i.e., eclectic and multidisciplinary) approach to economics entails nihilism is unfounded, it reaches the following conclusions. (1) Lachmann held a sophisticated institutional position vis-a`-vis economics that anticipated developments in contemporary new institutional economics. (2) …

  • Harald B. Malmgren's Analysis of the Firm

Nicolai Juul Fo, Nicolai J Foss•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•1996•References: 11

This paper analyses Harald B. Malmgren's neglected 1961 paper 'Information, expectations, and the theory of the firm', which provided the first extensive elaboration of Coase's 1937 analysis in 'The nature of the firm'. Malmgren's primary sources of inspiration were Coase, Hayek, Richardson and Penrose. Combining these sources in a creative way allowed Malmgren to anticipate themes that have only recently been addressed in the theory of economic …

  • The Coordination of Investments in a Market Economy

    Nicolai Juul Fo, Nicolai J Foss•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In a recent article in this journal, Fikret Adaman and Pat Devine argued that one of the important reasons for the current crisis of confidence confronting socialists today is the absence of any convincing model of allocation. In their attempt to take steps towards such a model - centred around what they call participatory democratic planning - one that transcends the simplicities of earlier market schemes. Adaman and Devine provide a useful and …

  • Spontaneous Social Order

Open Access•Nicolai Juul Fo, Nicolai Juul Foss•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This paper relates to the emerging economics/sociology-nexus, in arguing that economists may have a lesson to learn from the work of the sociologist Alfred Schütz. The problem of coordination, which is the problem of theoretically demonstrating the possibility of spontaneous order in society, is discussed. While conventional economics and classical game-theory have not solved or even convincingly addressed this problem, it is explicitly addressed…

  • The two Coasian traditions

Nicolai Juul Fo, Nicolai Juul Foss•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•1994•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Starting from the observation that the modern theory of the firm is branching out in at least two directions, this article argues that the existing differences lie in their underlying ontology. On the basis of the discussion of Bhaskar (1978) it is argued that underneath the neoclassical ‘nexus of contracts’- approach to the firm is an ontology that differs from that of the more heterodox Williamsonian transaction-cost economics. From the differe…
