The Social Mission Committee
One of the most fundamental purposes of medical education is to train future physicians in how to best care for the sick. 1 In response to national unrest, medical schools are being increasingly called to incorporate social determinants of health into their curriculum to best provide comprehensive, informed care. 2 Traditionally, medical schools often fail to emphasize social medicine within their school processes. We propose a student-driven app…
Embedding Learning in a Learning Health Care System to Improve Clinical Practice
PROBLEM: In an ideal learning health care system (LHS), clinicians learn from what they do and do what they learn, closing the evidence-to-practice gap. In operationalizing an LHS, great strides have been made in knowledge generation. Yet, considerable challenges remain to the broad uptake of identified best practices. To bridge the gap from generating actionable knowledge to applying that knowledge in clinical practice, and ultimately to improvi…
The Vanderbilt Program in Interprofessional Learning
PROBLEM: Designing and sustaining a longitudinal, clinic-based interprofessional learning experience is logistically challenging, which has limited the educational opportunities available in health professions schools. The authors discuss the Vanderbilt Program in Interprofessional Learning (VPIL), which addresses some of the challenges facing clinic-based interprofessional experiences. APPROACH: VPIL places first- and second-year students from 4…
Fostering the Development of Master Adaptive Learners
Change is ubiquitous in health care, making continuous adaptation necessary for clinicians to provide the best possible care to their patients. The authors propose that developing the capabilities of a Master Adaptive Learner will provide future physicians with strategies for learning in the health care environment and for managing change more effectively. The concept of a Master Adaptive Learner describes a metacognitive approach to learning bas…
When Women “Snap”
Media depictions play an important role in the cultivation and perpetuation of social stigmas surrounding mental illness. Through a critical textual analysis of female perpetrators of violence in three examples drawn from diverse media forms, we explore how depictions from very different genres help to map key themes in a broader popular discourse framing violence committed by women as a consequence of mental illness. The mental health frames we …
Teaching intercultural awareness to first‐year medical students via experiential exercises
This study assessed the extent to which a one‐time experiential intervention improved intercultural awareness and sensitivity among first‐year medical students. The students participated in group activities in which they shared personal experiences, solved a hypothetical problem, and engaged in team building exercises. Post‐intervention, students reported less intercultural awareness, but a greater commitment to improving the intercultural climat…
