Dale Tomich (1946-2024)…in His Own Words (Part II)
Dale Tomich, who passed away in August 2024, had a singular trajectory as a Caribbean scholar. His best-known work, Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar: Martinique and the World Economy (1830-1848) (1990) stands rather apart in Caribbean historiography, even though his construct of the “second slavery” has been fertile for Atlantic history (Blackburn 2024; Dal Lago 2025). Tomich has been especially recognized beyond the United States, where his work …
The necessary scholarship of Dale W. Tomich
In this brief introduction, we highlight the critical contributions of the esteemed scholar, historical sociologist and theoretical historian, Dale Tomich, whose scholarly interventions have contributed to changing the field of plantation slavery, studies of capital and historical studies in general. We emphasize his key historical and methodological interventions, particularly the importance of studying locales at several intersecting scales, un…
Race and Rurality in the Global Economy
Essays that examine globalization's effects with an emphasis on the interplay of race and rurality as it occurs across diverse geographies and peoples. Issues of migration, environment, rurality, and the visceral "politics of place" and "space" have occupied center stage in recent electoral political struggles in the United States and Europe, suffused by an antiglobalization discourse that has come to resonate with Euro-American peoples. Race and…
Sidney W. Mintz (1922–2015)
Just a few weeks over 93, anthropologist Sidney W. Mintz passed away in December 2015. A long and productive life blessed with good health ended suddenly from injuries sustained in a fall. As odd as this may seem regarding a person his age, Sid Mintz's death felt quite untimely. Until the end, Sid enjoyed life and was beloved by family, colleagues, and friends. He was a keen observer, a great storyteller, an expert cook and food enthusiast, a you…
“Peripheral” Labour? Studies in the History of Partial Proletarianization
This volume takes an alternative look at the notion of 'wage-workers'. The contributors suggest that the idea of a 'pure' working class should be reconsidered and examine specific South Asian and Latin American case studies. A large part of the working class in the so-called third world and also in the main capitalist countries is either free (but coerced through non-economic means) or does hidden work labor e.g. as formally self-employed produce…
