The Use of Narcotic Drugs in Stockholm County, Sweden. A Follow-up After 17 years
The longitudinal prospective investigation has covered a 17-year period from the initial examination in 1977–1979. All the data were obtained using the blind method and were complete before compilations were begun. During the three years 1977–1979, 22 men and 9 women had died after arrival, unconscious, from heroin intoxicati…
Human Violence in Stockholm County, Sweden
We studied the subsequent life and development of 182 teenagers sampled from the general population (the controls) and compared them with 345 teenagers of the same ages (the probands) who were taken care of by the Social Service Department, all of them from Greater Stockholm. There was more violence and aggressiveness in the behaviour of the probands than the controls and their early childhood was already filled with violence. The probands were e…
Brain Damage and Neuropsychological Impairment in the General Population and Alcoholics
Computed tomography (CT) of the brain and neuropsychological assessment was performed in a random sample of a total of 195 men (the controls) and 211 male alcoholic in-patients (the probands). The same medical, social and neuroradiological methods were used for examination of the probands as for the controls. Laboratory tests were performed, including liver and pancreatic tests. Toxicological screening was performed and the consumption of hepatot…
Male Offspring of Alcoholic Parents Compared with Men from the General Population
The probands, 211 male alcoholic inpatients, were compared with their controls, a simple random sample of 200 men, from Greater Stockholm. The group of male alcoholic inpatients and the random sample were subdivided with respect to alcohol consumption and use of hepatotoxic drugs: (IA) men from the random sample with low or moderate alcohol consumption and no use of drugs (n = 169); (IB) men from the random sample with low or moderate alcohol con…
