  • Therapy the Natural Way

Open Access•Carina Ribe Fernee, Terje Mesel et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2019•References: 37

Wilderness therapy has the potential to meet the specific needs of the current adolescent population by providing a rather unique outdoor group treatment. Wilderness therapy is not a new approach to mental health treatment, but its theoretical basis is not yet clearly delineated, in part because of the diversity found across programs and contexts. This article presents a critical realist exploration of a wilderness therapy program that was recent…

  • The effectiveness of wilderness therapy as mental health treatment for adolescents in Norway

Open Access•Leiv Einar Gabrielsen, Leif Eskedal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

This paper investigates the effectiveness of a Norwegian wilderness therapy programme, Friluftsterapi, which is offered to adolescents within a specialized mental health care setting. This mixed methods study incorporated (1) psychometric pre-, post-, and 12 month follow-up data, (2) executive functioning data, and (3) qualitative data from two rounds of individual participant interviews. The results indicate that group averages remained largely …

  • The role of wilderness therapy for adolescents in the face of global trends of urbanization and technification

    Open Access•Leiv Einar Gabrielsen, Nevin J Harper•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

The authors argue that if living life increasingly disconnected from the natural world is part of the cause, then reversing, or at least moderating these trends and resultant pathology, must be part of the solution. Evidence-b…

  • Unpacking the Black Box of Wilderness Therapy

Open Access•Carina Ribe Fernee, Leiv Einar Gabrielsen et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 34

Despite considerable progress within wilderness and adventure therapy research over the last decade, researchers are still unable to precisely answer why, how, and for whom this treatment modality works. There is also a need for more knowledge regarding the circumstances under which the treatment does not appear to be effective. In this realist synthesis, we attempt to unpack this "black box" of wilderness therapy more specifically, defined as a …

  • Exploring the relationship between physical activity, life goals and health-related quality of life among high school students

Open Access•Julie Sigvartsen, Leiv Einar Gabrielsen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Self-reported physical activity habits and life goals were associated with HRQOL to a limited extent. However, the perceived importance of life goals appears to reflect other aspects of individual well-being than HRQOL
