Cannabis-Induced Persistent Perceptual Disturbances: A Clinical Characterization Study of Multimodal Sensory Symptoms in 13 Patients
Cannabis use has been associated with persistent perceptual disturbances, but systematic clinical characterization remains limited, particularly regarding multimodal sensory involvement. To characterize persistent perceptual disturbances following cannabis use, focusing on symptom profiles, temporal patterns, and clinical features. This exploratory observational study was conducted across the Valle d'Aosta and Piemonte regions of Italy between 20…
A Systematic Review of Clinical Phenomenology, Differential Diagnosis and Prognostic Outcomes of Substance-Induced Psychotic Disorders
BACKGROUND: Distinguishing substance-induced psychotic disorders (SIPD) from primary psychotic disorders with concurrent substance use remains a critical diagnostic challenge for treatment planning and prognostic counseling. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the clinical phenomenology of SIPD, identify distinguishing symptom patterns, and examine relationships between phenomenology and outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, PsycINFO,…
Real-world outcomes of lurasidone augmentation for treatment-resistant bipolar depression: A retrospective observational analysis
Lurasidone appears to be an effective and generally well-tolerated adjunctive option for TRBD. However, remission rates remained low, underscoring the need for further research. In this perspective, lurasidone may contribute to more individualized treatment strategies for difficult-to-treat patients, although confirmatory studies are required to better define its role within precision psychiatry
Self-disturbance in first-episode psychosis: Theoretical framework and potential cannabis interactions - a systematic review
Cannabis use represents a significant environmental risk factor for psychotic disorders, with emerging evidence suggesting complex interactions between cannabinoid exposure, dissociative experiences, and fundamental disturbances of self-experience (self-disorders) in early psychosis. This systematic review examines the phenomenological and neurobiological relationships among dissociation, cannabis use, and self-disturbance in first-episode psycho…
Mental automatism and exogenous psychosis: The originality of De Clérambault’s and Karl Bonhoeffer’s theories in substance-related psychoses
The relationship between substance use and the onset of psychosis has been a subject of clinical and academic debate for centuries. The potential for cannabis to trigger psychosis was first suggested by Grose in 1772, who documented issues related to cannabis use in India (1). Karl Jaspers later explored this connection in his Allgemeine Psychopathologie (1959), describing toxic intoxications as "model psychoses" that mimic acute episodes, noting…
Ipsa senectus morbus est? Approaching the unmet needs in geriatric depression: Results from a national survey of medical experts
The survey was aimed at delving into the possible unmet needs in the management of geriatric depression according to the sample of physicians surveyed, thus trying to provide useful insights on geriatric depression care
High-Risk Periods and Opportunity Windows in First-Episode Psychosis, Cannabis Use, and Suicide Risk: A Narrative Systematic Review
Phenomenology of Spatial Atmospheres: Exploring Schizophrenia Pathology Through Binswanger's Insights
This study explores the perception of spatial atmospheres within the framework of the development of schizophrenia pathology. We draw inspiration from Binswanger's theoretical framework and find solid grounding in the philosophical perspectives of Merleau-Ponty, Straus, and Tellenbach. The inquiry's central focus revolves around the examination of atmosphere as a fundamental, pre-thematic mode of communication, generating a spatial experience tha…

Psychotic-Like Experiences in Young Recreational Users of Ketamine: A Case Study
This study explores the psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) associated with recreational ketamine use among young adults. Ketamine, initially introduced as an anesthetic, is now widely used recreationally for its dissociative effects, raising concerns about its impact on mental health. Ten participants aged 18-24, who used ketamine recreationally multiple times a week, were assessed using the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE-42). R…
Aberrant salience in cannabis-induced psychosis: A comparative study
This study may help understanding the role of AS in both non-substance-related and substance-induced psychosis. This knowledge may lead clinician to a better diagnosis and identify patient-tailored psychopharmacological treatment
Climate Change and Psychiatry: The Correlation between the Mean Monthly Temperature and Admissions to an Acute Inpatient Unit
These results confirm the impact of meteorological factors on mental disorders, particularly on BD. This can contribute to personalised follow-up and efficient resource allocation and poses grounds for studies into etiopathological mechanisms and therapeutic implications
Internet Gaming Disorders and Early Onset Psychosis in Young People: A Case Study and Clinical Observations
Although it is difficult to show the specific mechanisms underlying the psychopathological alterations in IGD, it is clear that excessive exposure to video games could be a risk factor for precipitating psychosis especially in a vulnerable age group such as adolescence. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of a higher risk of psychotic onset associated specifically with gaming disorders in very young people
Lurasidone use in Cannabis-Induced Psychosis: A Novel Therapeutic Strategy and Clinical Considerations in Four Cases Report
There are non-controlled studies for the use of lurasidone in first episode psychosis cannabis induced. These findings suggest that lurasidone is an atypical antipsychotic beneficial in this clinical picture. Treatment with medium-high doses of lurasidone could be effective and tolerable in this phase of the disorder. Randomized control trials with longer follow-up are recommended to confirm these positive results
Duration of Untreated Disorder and Cannabis Use: An Observational Study on a Cohort of Young Italian Patients Experiencing Psychotic Experiences and Dissociative Symptoms
According to our study, cannabis use can be a predictor of FEP and DUP, and of disease outcome. However, several factors might influence the relationship between cannabis use and DUP. Preventing cannabis use and early diagnosis of psychotic disorders might impact the disease by reducing the persistence of symptoms and limiting dissociative experiences
What Happened to Patients With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder During the Covid-19 Pandemic? A Multicentre Report From Tertiary Clinics in Northern Italy
After the outbreak of Coronavirus disease was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, this resulted in extraordinary public health measures to control the infection, such as entire countries being placed under quarantine. The psychopathological consequences of the pandemic and quarantine were anticipated to be of particular relevance, especially in patients with psychiatric disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Aim …
Age at Menarche in Women With Bipolar Disorder: Correlation With Clinical Features and Peripartum Episodes
Age at menarche may be related to specific characteristics of women with BD. The results deserve to be deepened in further studies
Attitudes of Italian Psychiatrists Toward the Evaluation of Physical Comorbidities and Sexual Dysfunction in Patients With Schizophrenia. Implications for Clinical Practice
Treatment guidelines for patients with schizophrenia recommend evaluating their risk of physical comorbidities, especially since these patients are known to have decreased life expectancy due to comorbidities. Therefore, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first national survey conducted to investigate how Italian psychiatrists deal with the risk of physical comorbidities and sexual dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia. A sample of 750 p…

Prevalence and Correlates of Vitamin D Deficiency in a Sample of 290 Inpatients With Mental Illness
Introduction: Vitamin D inadequacy or deficiency (VDID) has been reported in a high percentage of otherwise healthy individuals. Factors that may contribute to the high prevalence of VDID in people with mental disorders include diet low in vitamin D, poor sunlight exposure, decrease in cutaneous vitamin D synthesis, intake of certain medications, poor mobility, excessive alcohol intake, and tobacco smoking. VDID has been correlated to a host of a…
Maximum Temperature and Solar Radiation as Predictors of Bipolar Patient Admission in an Emergency Psychiatric Ward
Environmental variables can regulate behavior in healthy subjects. Recently, some authors investigated the role of meteorological variables in bipolar patients with an impact on both the onset and course of bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of meteorological variables and other indexes in bipolar hospitalized patients. We examined all patients admitted to the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit of San Luigi Gonzaga…
Switching antipsychotic medication to aripiprazole: Position paper by a panel of Italian psychiatrists
Few studies have addressed the indications for antipsychotic switching and the best practical strategies to achieve the desired goal in the clinical practice setting. Studies on antipsychotic switching should clarify why, when and how a switch should be done. The results should standardize the reasons for switching an antipsychotic, assess the optimal time to switch and evaluate the best ways to switch. Both clinical and pharmacological factors s…
