Association of remote work with tobacco and alcohol use
Remote workers showed higher prevalence of tobacco dependence and hazardous alcohol use. The health behavior of remote workers should be carefully monitored
Challenging the utility of 24-hour recall of exclusive breast feeding in Japan
INTRODUCTION: WHO recommends exclusive breast feeding from birth to 6 months. However, to monitor populations, it recommends using the proportion of infants under 6 months who were exclusively breastfed during the previous 24 hours. To assess the usefulness of 24-hour recall, we (1) compared the prevalence of exclusive breast feeding measured by since-birth recall to the prevalence measured by 24-hour recall and (2) quantified each indicator's as…
Decline in Partner-Accompanied Births during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Japan
The study objective was to describe trends in partner-accompanied birth between January 2019 and August 2021 and examine the associations of partner-accompanied birth with women's psychological distress and partners' housework and parenting. A total of 5605 women who had a live singleton birth between January 2019 and August 2021 and had a partner participated in this nationwide internet-based survey between July and August 2021 in Japan. The per…
Association between Heated Tobacco Product Use during Pregnancy and Fetal Growth in Japan
Combustible cigarette smoking impacts fetal growth during pregnancy. However, the risk associated with heated tobacco products (HTPs) remains unclear. This nationwide cross-sectional study investigated whether HTP use during pregnancy is associated with small for gestational age (SGA) outcomes among 5647 post-delivery women with singleton pregnancies, which were divided into four groups: lifetime never-smokers, former smokers before pregnancy, an…
EMBRACE intervention to improve the continuum of care in maternal and newborn health in Ghana
BACKGROUND: Improving maternal and newborn health remains one of the most critical public health challenges, particularly in low- and lower-middle-income countries. To overcome this challenge, interventions to improve the continuum of care based on real-world settings need to be provided. The Ghana Ensure Mothers and Babies Regular Access to Care (EMBRACE) Implementation Research Team conducted a unique intervention program involving over 21 000 …
Trust and well-being of postpartum women during the Covid-19 crisis
During crisis, trust has been found to have a buffering effect in the prevention of the deterioration of mental well-being, as trust is considered to reflect the individual's capability to gain social resources including both formal and informal support. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, political trust has been found to reduce anxiety. Taking these findings into account, this study explores the association of generalised and political …
Nicotine dependence of cigarette and heated tobacco users in Japan, 2019
Regardless of HTP use, daily cigarette users had higher prevalence of nicotine dependence compared with non-daily cigarette users. Exclusive HTP users had similar (or potentially higher) dependence compared with exclusive, non-daily cigarette users. Longitudinal studies are needed to interrogate the public health implications of growing HTP use worldwide
Nutritional status and dietary diversity of school-age children living with HIV
Prevalence of stunting was more than double that of non-infected school-age children living in urban areas in Cambodia. This highlights the importance of conducting nutritional intervention programs, especially tailored for children living with HIV in the country. Although dietary diversity was not significantly associated with children's nutritional status in this study, the findings will contribute to implementing future nutritional interventio…
Workplace smoke-free policies that allow heated tobacco products and electronic cigarettes use are associated with use of both these products and conventional tobacco smoking
Workplaces that allow HTP/e-cigarette use indoors were associated with higher rate for HTP and e-cigarette users, and for combustible cigarette smokers. National legislation banning tobacco should be enforced and also cover HTPs and e-cigarettes in order to avoid renormalisation of smoking and nicotine addiction
Who Uses E-cigarettes and Why? E-cigarette Use among Older Adolescents and Young Adults in Japan
A variety of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are sold in Japan and targeted toward young people. However, few studies have considered who uses e-cigarettes and why they use them. This study examined factors associated with e-cigarette use and the reasons for their use among the young population in Japan. Our internet-based cross-sectional study was conducted between February and March 2019. We analyzed the data of 2,414 participants aged 15-…
Psychological well-being and adherence to antiretroviral therapy among adolescents living with HIV in Zambia
Physical and psychosocial changes during adolescence could influence the psychological well-being and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) of adolescents living with HIV. However, few studies have assessed these two important issues in Zambia. This study aimed at addressing this gap by examining adolescents' depressive symptoms and ART adherence. This was a mixed-methods study conducted from April to July 2014. We recruited 200 adolescents, …
Determinants of attending antenatal care at least four times in rural Ghana
BACKGROUND: Improving maternal health is a global challenge. In Ghana, maternal morbidity and mortality rates remain high, particularly in rural areas. Antenatal care (ANC) attendance is known to improve maternal health. However, few studies have updated current knowledge regarding determinants of ANC attendance. OBJECTIVE: This study examined factors associated with ANC attendance in predominantly rural Ghana. METHODS: We conducted a cross-secti…
Perceived social support and the psychological well-being of Aids orphans in urban Kenya
Parental deaths due to AIDS seriously affect the psychological well-being of children. Social support may provide an effective resource in the care of vulnerable children in resource-limited settings. However, few studies have examined the relationships between social support and psychological well-being among AIDS orphans. This cross-sectional study was conducted to explore associations between perceived social support (PSS) and the psychologica…
