Age Heaping and Life Course Reckoning: Individual-level Evidence from Spanish Inquisition Records
Human capital, and numerical abilities in particular, are a crucial resource for economic development, but measuring numeracy is a major challenge. The Spanish Inquisition offers a possibility to assess numerical skills, as the inquisitors performed indirectly a mathematics test with the accused. They asked for their age and for a detailed life narrative, with many defendants failing to notice if the sum of the narrative did not add up to the giv…

The Early Modern Hispanic World: Transnational and Interdisciplinary Approaches

It focuses predominantly on questions of how people understood the rapidly changing world in which they lived - how they …
Women’s Status, Family Systems, and Marriage in a Time of Economic Crisis: Cuenca, 1500–1650
Using a variety of archival sources, this article traces the transition in Cuenca, Spain, from the bilateral family system that predominated in late medieval Castile to the final triumph of the patrilineal, agnatic family system in the seventeenth century. The central measure of this transition is the interlocking fates of the dowry and the arras (bride price). As the patriarchal, patrilineal family became entrenched during a period of demographi…
Reckoning with One’s Life: Numeracy, Life Course, and Signs of Modernity among the Conversos of Early Modern Castile
This article adds another dimension to the debate whether Jewish modernity originated with the Haskalah in eighteenth-century Germany or among the Sephardic Jews living in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Noting that one element of modernity was rationalism, the author uses two commonly employed indices of rationalism (literacy and numeracy) to find that the most literate and numerate of Castile’s various socio-economic or ethnic groups were the Lu…

Juana the Mad: Sovereignty and Dynasty in Renaissance Europe
Born to Isabel and Ferdinand, Catholic Monarchs whose marriage united realms of Castile and Aragon, Juana the Mad (1479-1555) is one of most infamous but least studied monarchs of Renaissance. Conventional accounts of Juana portray her as a sullen woman prone to depression, a jealous wife insanely in love with her husband, and an incompetent queen who was deemed by her father, husband, and son, unable to govern herself much less her kingdoms. But…
