  • Ketamine treatment for buprenorphine-precipitated opioid withdrawal

Open Access•Ezioma Gbujie, Lisa Vercollone et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Ketamine may be an effective adjunctive agent in managing opioid withdrawal. Usually restricted to the intensive care unit and emergency department, this case report highlights both the potential and risks of IV ketamine on the general hospital floors. Further research is needed to better understand the safety of using ketamine to manage opioid withdrawal

  • Phosphatidylethanol levels and their association with withdrawal severity among individuals with severe alcohol use disorder seeking inpatient withdrawal management

Open Access•Jeong Hoo Lee, Veronica Szpak et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Consistent with prior reports, PEth levels appear to correlate with patients' alcohol consumption including heavy drinking, but our results did not find that PEth levels predict alcohol withdrawal severity among heavy drinkers seeking inpatient withdrawal management. Further research is warranted to better understand the utility of PEth testing

  • Impact of cannabidiol on reward- and stress-related neurocognitive processes among individuals with opioid use disorder

Open Access•Joji Suzuki, Sara Prostko et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

  • My Friend Said it was Good LSD”

Joji Suzuki, Justin L Poklis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2014

A new class of synthetic hallucinogens called NBOMe has emerged, and reports of adverse effects are beginning to appear. We report on a case of a suicide attempt after LSD ingestion which was analytically determined to be 25I-NBOMe instead. Clinicians need to have a high index of suspicion for possible NBOMe ingestion in patients reporting the recent use of LSD or other hallucinogens

  • Paradise Lost

Takeshi Isomura, Joji Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2013

The neural reward circuit and cognitive distortion play an important role in addiction; however, the relationship between the two has not yet been addressed. In this article, we review recent findings on nicotine dependence and propose a novel hypothesis. Previous research using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has shown that while activation of the reward circuit (ventral striatum) appears in response to tobacco-related rewards in ni…
