  • The model effect: How the facial attractiveness of a model shapes clothing evaluation

Open Access•Youngjin Hur, Bunyaporn Burechittinanta•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2026

Clothing plays an integral role in the formation of first impressions and has been studied within social perception. However, little attention has been paid to the reverse process: whether evaluations of clothing are influenced by the attractiveness of the person wearing it. Across four studies, results consistently revealed a “model effect,” whereby attractive faces increased positive ratings of the clothing. This effect was found to be robust, …

  • Building sustainable volunteer engagement: Psychological determinants and behavioral outcomes in mega sport events

Open Access•Seongjin Yoo, Youngjin Hur et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2026

The engagement of volunteers is essential for successfully operating a mega sport event (MSE). This study applied the affective, behavioral, and cognitive model of attitude to advance theoretical understanding of how attitudinal components collectively shape volunteer behavior in MSEs. We conducted face-to-face surveys with 271 volunteers recruited during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. Structural equation modeling revealed that pride …

  • Understanding the psychology of fashion: Demographic, personality, and fashion factors underlying everyday clothing choices in the United Kingdom and United States

Youngjin Hur, Nancy L Segal et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2025

Fashion is one of the most common (aesthetic) activities, yet aside from a select number of works, systematic studies of clothing preference remain relatively rare. This study aims to extend this line of research by offering a more generalizable understanding of the predictors and descriptions of everyday clothing preferences. Samples were drawn from two English-speaking cultures (i.e., the UK and the USA; Ns = 402 and 400 respectively) and a ran…

  • “I am now being who I am and I’m proud of it”: Hair related personal and social identity and subjective wellbeing of older Black women in the UK

Open Access•Gabriela Daniels, Ameerah Khadaroo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2025

Hair is an important personal attribute defined by the person's natural hair shape, form and colour as well as by age and health. The hair of Black women has a specific curly texture that has been commonly manipulated to resemble straighter European hair, following centuries of oppressive beauty norms. The biological hair aging also presents challenges to some women due to the traditional social constructs of beauty and the persistent pressure on…

  • Differentiating the visual aesthetics of the sublime and the beautiful: Selective effects of stimulus size, height, and color on sublimity and beauty ratings in photographs

Youngjin Hur, Christian Hallam-Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2024

Despite the philosophical literature concerning the sublime and the beautiful, dating back to Burke (1759/2008), there is still limited empirical evidence regarding the visual aesthetics of sublimity and beauty. The present article asks whether the manner in which photographs are presented can alter the perception of the sublimity and beauty ratings of these photographs. In a set of studies, it is reported that the increase of presentation size i…

  • Cathedrals of sound: Predictors of the sublime and the beautiful in music, images, and music with images

Youngjin Hur, Radvile Medeisyte et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2024

The separate aesthetic responses of sublimity and beauty have been distinguished by philosophers (e.g., Burke, 1759/2008) and explored in recent psychological studies using visual images (e.g., Hur et al., 2022). In these works, sublimity, an experience involving astonishment or grandeur, has been contrasted with beauty, which is often associated with prettiness or cuteness. However, empirical studies of sublimity and beauty in music are rare, as…

  • Quantifying the if, the when, and the what of the sublime: A survey and latent class analysis of incidence, emotions, and distinct varieties of personal sublime experiences

Matthew Pelowski, Youngjin Hur et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2021

Sublime encounters provide a compelling example of the peaks of our shared emotional and cognitive experiences. For centuries, these have been a target for philosophy and, more recently, for psychology, with its renewed focus on profound or aesthetic events. The sublime has been theoretically connected to multiple contexts, from interactions with overpowering nature, to beauty, music, even interpersonal engagements, and to multiple emotions—dange…

  • Facing the sublime: Physiological correlates of the relationship between fear and the sublime

Youngjin Hur, Young-Jin Hur et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2020

The sublime is an enduring concept in Western aesthetic discourse and is often portrayed such as in Edmund Burke’s A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful of 1759 as a delightful horror, a kind of enjoyment based on negative emotions. In the current article, the relationship between sublimity and fear was explored using behavioral and physiological measures. In 2 studies (total N ≈ 120), photographs of na…

  • Service quality and complaint management influence fan satisfaction and team identification

Open Access•Cindy Lee, Youngjin Hur•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2019

We explored the influence of facility quality, performance quality, interaction quality, and complaint management on fan satisfaction and team identification. Participants were 283 fans of a Class A minor league baseball team, who completed an online survey on the team’s official social media website. We tested the efficacy of the proposed model using the structural equation modeling bootstrap procedure with maximum likelihood estimation. The res…

  • Sponsorship Information Reception and Processing: Explicit and Implicit Memory of In-Game Advertising

Open Access•Choong Hoon Lim, Youngjin Hur et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2018

Researchers have attempted to identify the impact of sponsors' advertising on spectators at sports events, but it is necessary to understand the dynamic mechanisms of the effect of advertising on signboards at these events. Thus, our primary purpose was to investigate the effects of emotion on spectators' implicit/explicit memory of sponsors' advertising. Further, we examined how visual attention can mediate the effects of emotion on explicit/imp…

  • Distracted by pleasure: Effects of positive versus negative valence on emotional capture under load

Rashmi Gupta, Youngjin Hur et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2015

We report 3 experiments examining the effects of positive versus negative valence and perceptual load in determining attention capture by irrelevant emotional distractors. Participants performed a letter search task searching for 1 of 2 target letters (X or N) in conditions of either low perceptual load (circular nontarget letters) or high perceptual load (angular nontarget letters that are similar to the target letters). On 25% of the trials an …

  • Happy to Support: Emotion as a Mediator in Brand Building Through Philanthropic Corporate Sponsorship

Open Access•Wooyoung Lee, Woo-Young Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2015

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is very meaningful in a culture such as that of the Republic of Korea, where individual ethics are grounded in Confucianism, which emphasizes humanism and altruism. We examined the mediating role of emotion in the relationships among participants' perceptions of CSR, their attitude toward philanthropic corporate sponsorship of a sporting event, and of the sponsoring company's brand equity. We c…
