    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2006

Data from a questionnaire were collected from 189 Japanese female undergraduates at a women's university. They were 18, 19, or 20 years of age. The measures included a 22-item 7-point voluntary simplicity lifestyle scale, a 9-item 5-point scale of the evaluation of a voluntarily simple life, an 11-item 4-point scale of environmentally responsible consumerism and a 28-item 5-point scale of a nonsimplicity lifestyle. Factor analysis was conducted f…

  • Some Psychological Correlates of Environmentally Responsible Behavior

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2004

This study investigated the relationship between six psychological variables and the environmentally responsible behavior of Japanese undergraduates; 106 males and 44 females. Their average age was 18.66 with a standard deviation of 1.38. The six variables were attitudes toward growth and technology, efficacy of personal proenvironmental behavior, sensitivity to noise, social awareness, emotional sensitivity, and behavioral independence. Multiple…

  • Coping Style and Three Psychological Measures Associated With Environmentally Responsible Behavior

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2002

Questionnaires containing five multi-item 5-point scales were administered to 153 Japanese male and female undergraduates. Data of each of the scales were factor analyzed and, as a rule, items with a factor loading of .40 or over were selected. The scale for coping style produced three factors: avoidance, self-deceptive optimism and problem solving. Each of the other four scales produced one factor. Using the total score for each scale or factor,…

  • Attitudinal Determinants of Environmentally Responsible Behavior

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2001

A study was conducted to investigate how voluntary simplicity lifestyle (VSL), hedonism and anti-materialism affect environmentally responsible behavior (ERB). Questionnaires containing multi-item 5-point or 7-point scales of ERB, VSL, hedonism and anti-materialism were administered to 130 undergraduates (51 males and 79 females). Factor analysis was applied to each of the scales. The VSL scale yielded two factors: 1) Careful shopping attitudes i…

  • Perceptual and Behavioral Correlates of Voluntary Simplicity Lifestyles

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1999

A study was conducted to investigate correlations between voluntary simplicity lifestyles (VSLs.) and perceptual or behavioral characteristics regarding VSLs.. Questionnaires each of which contained a 20-item 5-point scale of VSLs., a 13-item 4-point scale of the frequency of proenvironmental behaviors, and 23 5-point scales of various perceptual or behavioral characteristics regarding VSLs were administered to 250 female adults. The scale of VSL…

  • Attitudinal and Behavioral Correlates of Voluntary Simplicity Lifestyles

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1997

Questionnaires containing 20 statements of voluntary simplicity lifestyles and 23 statements of selected attitudes and behavior related to these lifestyles were administered to 135 undergraduates. The subjects were required to rate the degree of agreement or disagreement with the statement on 5-point scales. Three unrotated factors were obtained by factor analysis. According to second-order factor analysis, voluntary simplicity lifestyles, cautio…

  • Some Attitudinal and Literacy Correlates of Proenvironmentalism

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1996

Two studies were conducted. Study I tested two hypotheses: there is a positive relationship between proenvironmentalism and need for achievement; there is a positive relationship between proenvironmentalism and a positive attitude toward social welfare. Subjects were 129 undergraduates and 27 college level students (45 males and 111 females). The hypotheses were generally supported. Study II investigated relationships of proenvironmental attitude…

  • Crowding and Behavior in Japanese Public Spaces: Some Observations and Speculations

    Open Access•Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1992

First, the connotations in Japan of crowded situations were discussed. In the second section, some personal characteristics of those who might experience crowding, and of partners who might share a space with the former, were discussed as determinants of individual differences in the experience of crowding. In the third section, it was suggested that high collectivism, a non-contact culture, and high population density combined with a high crime …

  • The relationship of noise sensitivity to health and personality

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1984

Two studies were carried out to test two hypotheses on noise sensitivity. In the first study it was hypothesized that persons whose level of noise sensitivity was high tend to be less healthy than those whose level was low. Utilizing Iwata's Noise Sensitivity Scale, 33 subjects who scored high on the scale and 33 who scored low were selected for the study from a sample of 132 undergraduates. These two groups were compared in terms of health measu…

  • Territoriality Orientation, Privacy Orientation and Locus of Control as Determinants of the Perception of Crowding

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1980

One hundred and eleven Japanese female college students filled out questionnaires of crowding, in which each subject guessed in 12 pairs of situations with how many partners a fictitious person whose sex and age were supposed to be identical to each subject was considered to be able to share a room without feeling uncomfortable. Smaller numbers of partners meant the subject was more liable to experience crowding. Territoriality orientation, priva…

  • Selected Personality Traits as Determinants of the Perception of Crowding

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1979

Effects of selected personality traits upon perception of crowding were investigated in 132 Japanese female college students. These traits were adjustment, trust in people, interpersonal affiliation, self-esteem, extroversion-introversion and neuroticism. They were measured by scores on a personality inventory and on several three-point scales. Crowding measures were obtained in terms of the maximum number of partners with whom a fictitious perso…

  • Some Personal Attributes and Spatial Factors in the Perception of Crowding

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1978

The subjects were 132 female undergraduates. They were asked to fill out two questionnaires of crowding in which they had to tell the maximum number of other people with whom they thought they could share a room without feeling uncomfortable. Significant personal attributes of crowding were familiarity, ethnicity, sex, age, social status, criminality, feeble-mindedness, handicappedness, likability, and similarity. Simulated personal space data we…

  • Effects of Bystander Density Upon Altruistic Behavior

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1977

College students participated in a questionnaire study. The questionnaire booklet contained 11 pairs of situational descriptions in which someone in distress needed help. All pairs were dissociated and the 22 situations randomly ordered. One situation of each pair represented high bystander density and the other low. Subjects were requested to choose an altruistic or less altruistic response to each situation. Results were very similar for male a…

  • An Analytical Study on the Effect of Acoustic Environment Upon a Continuous Addition Task

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1975

This study analyzed individual differences in the effect of noise upon a continuous addition task (Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic Test). Female college students worked the task in both quiet and noisy conditions. Radio news and a cross-talk comedy were presented during the noisy condition. High and low scorers were selected in terms of performance level, fluctuation of performance, strain of will-power, errors, and effect of rest which were ob…

  • Empirical Examination of the Perception of Density and Crowding

    Osamu Iwata•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1974

192 students who were enrolled in introductory psychology courses served as Ss. They participated in an experiment for 1 of 3 density conditions. This study was a Ethnicity (Japanese-Americans, Caucasians)× Sex (male, female)× Density (low, medium, high) factorial design. Each cell had 16Ss. 3 (low), 5 or 6 (medium), or 8 (high) people were confined in a small room for 8 min. They had to stand with their back to the wall and were not allowed to m…
