Subjective well-being and quality of life of rural-to-urban migrant and local older adults in Dongguan, China
We conducted a community-based survey to compare the subjective well-being (SWB) and quality of life (QoL) of 470 rural-to-urban migrant and 422 local older adults living in Dongguan, China. Ordinal logistic regression was used to assess the dose-response relationships of SWB, QoL, and individual and environmental factors. Results show that migrant (vs. local) residents had greater SWB and better QoL. Positive self-rated health, lack of chronic d…
Subjective well-being of older adult internal migrants in China
Social environmental factors have rarely been considered in studies exploring the subjective well-being of older adult internal migrants in China. Thus, we investigated the effects of social environmental factors on the subjective well-being of 470 internal migrants (age range = 60–87 years) living in Dongguan, China, using data collected from a survey. The results indicate that the subjective well-being of older adult internal migrants was influ…
Nothing Like Living with a Family
Chinese economic development has led to a significant rise in internal migration over the last 20 years, including large numbers of elderly. When elderly Chinese people migrate, they still register their residency to their place of origin and often do not register with the new administrative office at the destination due to the household registration (hukou) system in China. Thus, most of these migrant elderly do not receive full social services,…
Religious affiliation and disparities in risk of non-communicable diseases and health behaviours
This study aims to compare the health-related behaviours and risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) between Muslims and non-Muslims in Thailand, a predominantly Buddhist country in which Muslims are the second largest religious group. Data from the fourth Thai National Health Examination Survey (NHES IV) conducted in 2009 were used to run multivariate survey logistic regression models with adjustment for age, gender and socio-economic status in…
Growth and development of children aged 1–5 years in low-intensity armed conflict areas in Southern Thailand
Unlike war refugees and internally-displaced persons in camp-like settings, the relationship between level of armed conflict and growth and developmental delay among children aged 1-5 years could not be demonstrated in the community setting of this study where food supply had been minimally perturbed
Urban and rural variation in clustering of metabolic syndrome components in the Thai population
Metabolic syndrome affects both urban and rural population with different pattern of MetS combinations. Dyslipidemia and obesity were the most common components among women in rural areas, hence, interventions to prevent and control these factors should be strengthened
Smoking behaviour and associated factors of illicit cigarette consumption in a border province of southern Thailand
Illicit cigarette consumption has become more acceptable especially among young adult smokers. Age and extent of social networks are important factors associated with smoking illicit cigarettes
Effect of village income and household income on sanitation facilities, hygiene behaviours and child undernutrition during rapid economic growth in a rural cross-border area, Yunnan, China
BACKGROUND: The study aimed to examine the effects of village income and household income on child nutrition status through basic sanitation and hygiene behaviours. METHODS: A survey was conducted in a rural cross-border area of Yunnan, China. Data on village income in 2002-2006 and household income in 2002-2007 were obtained from an official report and a household survey respectively. Anthropometric measurement of the children aged 6 months to 5…
HIV vaccine acceptability among immigrant Thai residents in Los Angeles
This study examined HIV vaccine acceptability among immigrant Thai residents in Los Angeles, California. We combined a qualitative research method (focus groups) with an innovative market research method (conjoint analysis). Focus groups explored social issues, concerns, barriers and motivators associated with HIV vaccine acceptability. Conjoint analysis was used to assess preferences among eight hypothetical HIV vaccines with varying attribute p…
