Acute myasthenia caused by lithium
We report the case of an 18-year-old female patient with bipolar disorder who developed recurrent acute myasthenia after taking lithium. The myasthenia resolved upon discontinuation of lithium, and this occurred twice. The results of the cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multiple sleep latency test, polysomnography, ambulatory electroencephalogram (EEG), and other tests were all negative. In summary, the patient's acute myasthenia was att…
How to treat major depressive disorder with shorter-duration hypomanic episodes? A case report
Here we report on a case of a 61-year-old female patient with 7-year history of major depressive disorder with shorter-duration hypomanic episodes who was prescribed with antidepressants which turned out to be ineffective. After a COVID-19 infection, the patient's clinical presentation became sufficient for the diagnosis of bipolar disorder and she was consistently effective on a mood stabilizer and an atypical antipsychotic. The course of treatm…
Is thyroid dysfunction a cause or a trigger of bipolar disorder? a case report
Here we report on a case of a 40-year-old female patient who presented with hypomanic episode after hyperthyroidism and major depressive episode after hypothyroidism, which was initially misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder due to another medical condition, and was found to be a co-morbid bipolar disorder of hyperthyroidism after treatment and follow-up. The course of diagnosis and treatment in this case suggests a close temporal relationship does no…
Passive Event-Related Potentials by a Single Tone in Personality Disorders
A cerebral P3 potential (passive P3) in response to a single tone shares similar morphology to the classical P3 elicited in the active “oddball” paradigm, but reflects passive attention. As patients with schizotypal, antisocial, and borderline personality disorders show reduced amplitude and prolonged latency of classical P3, it is reasonable to expect that these patients might show an abnormal passive P3. We tested whether the single tone elicit…
