  • Resource Loss, Slow Violence, and Psychosocial Stress: The 2022 Pearl River Flood in Jackson, Mississippi

Open Access•Duane A Gill, Liesel Ashley Ritchie et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2026

In August 2022, the Pearl River flooded portions of Jackson, Mississippi and temporarily closed the city’s water treatment plant, leaving most citizens without access to safe drinking and potable water for more than a month. This event punctuated an ongoing water crisis that had lingered for decades in this predominately African American city. We employ a social production of disaster approach to reveal aspects of slow violence perpetrated agains…

  • A legacy of recreancy: Perceptions of routinized governmental failure in Jackson, MS

Open Access•A M Straub, Liesel Ashley Ritchie et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2025

In late August of 2022, Jackson, MS experienced severe flooding leaving approximately 150,000 without access to drinking water. Compounding this acute event is a decades long water crisis, often attributed to government neglect and mismanagement of water services. The chronic technological disaster (water crisis) worsened by a significant acute hazard event (the 2022 flood) in a place that regularly experiences flooding (persistent acute hazard e…

  • Post-tropical cyclone Fiona and Atlantic Canada: Media framing of hazard risk in the Anthropocene

    Open Access•A M Straub•ARTICLE•Disasters•2024•References: 84

Post-tropical cyclone Fiona made landfall in Nova Scotia, Canada, in September 2022 with the force of a Category 2 hurricane. Using 'risk society' as an analytical framework, and Thomas A. Birkland's 'focusing event' concept, this paper seeks to understand how publics construct risk in the context of climate change and how institutions engage with those narratives. A qualitative content analysis of 439 newspaper articles from across Canada reveal…

  • Networks of Inclusive Exclusion: Social Capital and Resilient Rural Livelihoods in the Southern Great Plains (SGP)

    Open Access•A M Straub, Jacqueline M Vadjunec et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2024•References: 55

Assessments of resilience and sustainability are increasingly important for mitigating the effects of climate change, especially in rural areas such as the Southern Great Plains (SGP) in the United States. While ecological and economic research on rural sustainability is necessary, we argue that a social approach is essential to understanding how to promote resilient futures. Social capital facilitates access to, and transference of resources ind…

  • Making the invisible visible: Examining Black women in Black Lives Matter

    Michelle L Estes, A M Straub et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2023•References: 18

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement was created by three women in 2013 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for the murder of teenager Trayvon Martin. Since inception, BLM has gained national attention through its organization of and participation in numerous social movement activities, many of which have been driven by Black women. However, previous research and the persistent existence of racism and sexism indicate that Black women may be mar…

  • Measuring and Explaining Stalled Gentrification in Newark, New Jersey: The Role of Racial Politics

Open Access•Domingo Morel, Akira Drake Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 55

Gentrification research focuses on timing and variation; how the racial makeup of cities and neighborhoods influences its extent; and the policies that foster or combat it. Most examines places with continuing or recent gentrification and majority-White leadership, such as New York City and San Francisco. We build on this by analyzing a majority-Black city where fear of gentrification is increasing, but gentrification is not widespread. To analyz…
