  • Impact of accelerometer data processing decisions on the sample size, wear time and physical activity level of a large cohort study

Open Access•Sarah Kozey Keadle, Eric J Shiroma et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Combining log-dates and the Choi algorithm was optimal, minimizing missing data and researcher burden. Estimates of time in physical activity and sedentary behavior are not directly comparable between V-axis and VM cut-points. These findings will inform consensus development for accelerometer data processing in ongoing epidemiologic studies

  • Guide to the Assessment of Physical Activity: Clinical and Research Applications: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Scott J Strath, Leonard A Kaminsky et al.•ARTICLE•Circulation•2013

The deleterious health consequences of physical inactivity are vast, and they are of paramount clinical and research importance. Risk identification, benchmarks, efficacy, and evaluation of physical activity behavior change initiatives for clinicians and researchers all require a clear understanding of how to assess physical activity. In the present report, we have provided a clear rationale for the importance of assessing physical activity level…

  • Validation of Wearable Monitors for Assessing Sedentary Behavior

Sarah Kozey Keadle, SARAH KOZEY-KEADLE et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine & Science in Sports &…•2011

PURPOSE: A primary barrier to elucidating the association between sedentary behavior (SB) and health outcomes is the lack of valid monitors to assess SB in a free-living environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of commercially available monitors to assess SB. METHODS: Twenty overweight (mean ± SD: body mass index = 33.7 ± 5.7 kg·m(-2)) inactive, office workers age 46.5 ± 10.7 yr were directly observed for two 6-h periods…

  • Physical Activity and Risk of Small-for-Gestational-Age Birth Among Predominantly Puerto Rican Women

Open Access•Audra Gollenberg, Audra L Gollenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2010

  • Amount of Time Spent in Sedentary Behaviors in the United States, 2003-2004

Charles Matthews, C E Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•2008

Sedentary behaviors are linked to adverse health outcomes, but the total amount of time spent in these behaviors in the United States has not been objectively quantified. The authors evaluated participants from the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey aged >/=6 years who wore an activity monitor for up to 7 days. Among 6,329 participants with at least one 10-hour day of monitor wear, the average monitor-wearing time was 13.9…

  • Calibration of Accelerometer Output for Children

Patty Freedson, Patty S Freedson et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine & Science in Sports &…•2005

Understanding the determinants of physical activity behavior in children and youths is essential to the design and implementation of intervention studies to increase physical activity. Objective methods to assess physical activity behavior using various types of motion detectors have been recommended as an alternative to self-report for this population because they are not subject to many of the sources of error associated with children's recall …

  • Development and Validation of a Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire

    Lisa Chasan-Taber, Lisa Chasan‐Taber et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine & Science in Sports &…•2004

PURPOSE: The effect of physical activity during pregnancy on maternal and fetal health remains controversial and studies have yet to identify the optimal dose of physical activity associated with favorable pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a pregnancy physical activity questionnaire (PPAQ). METHODS: To ascertain the type, duration, and frequency of physical activities performed by pregnant women, three 24-h phy…

  • Evaluating a model of parental influence on youth physical activity

    Open Access•Stewart G Trost, James F Sallis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Preventive…•2003

  • Age and gender differences in objectively measured physical activity in youth

Stewart G Trost, Russell R Pate et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine & Science in Sports &…•2002

TROST, S. G., R. R. PATE, J. F. SALLIS, P. S. FREEDSON, W. C. TAYLOR, M. DOWDA, and J. SIRARD. Age and gender differences in objectively measured physical activity in youth. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 34, No. 2, pp. 350–355, 2002. Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate age and gender differences in objectively measured physical activity (PA) in a population-based sample of students in grades 1–12. Methods Participants (185 male, 190…

  • Using objective physical activity measures with youth: How many days of monitoring are needed?

Stewart G Trost, Russell R Pate et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine & Science in Sports &…•2000

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to establish the minimal number of days of monitoring required for accelerometers to assess usual physical activity in children. METHODS: A total of 381 students (189 M, 192 F) wore a CSA 7164 uniaxial accelerometer for seven consecutive days. To examine age-related trends students were grouped as follows: Group I: grades 1-3 (N = 92); Group II: grades 4-6 (N = 98); Group III: grades 7-9 (N = 97); Group IV: …

  • Calibration of the Computer Science and Applications, Inc. accelerometer

Patty S Freedson, Edward L Melanson et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine & Science in Sports &…•1998

PURPOSE: We established accelerometer count ranges for the Computer Science and Applications, Inc. (CSA) activity monitor corresponding to commonly employed MET categories. METHODS: Data were obtained from 50 adults (25 males, 25 females) during treadmill exercise at three different speeds (4.8, 6.4, and 9.7 km x h(-1)). RESULTS: Activity counts and steady-state oxygen consumption were highly correlated (r = 0.88), and count ranges corresponding …

  • Contribution of breast volume and weight to body fat distribution in females

    Open Access•Victor L Katch, Barbara Campaigne et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1980•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Breast volume and body composition were measured in 45 adult females to determine the contribution of breast weight and breast volume to total body fat. Plaster casts were filled with sand of known density to obtain breast volume. Breast weight was computed as breast volume times its density. The correlation between total breast volume and percent body fat was r = .40. Breast weight ( X = 484 grams) accounted for 3.5 percent of the total weight o…

  • Measurement of breast volume in females: Description of a reliable method

    Open Access•Barbara N Campaigne, Victor L Katch et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1979

Breast volume measurements were made on 47 adult subjects using a casting method. After drying, fast-setting plaster casts were filled with sand of known density to a level approximating the curvature of the chest wall. The reliability of both sand filling and casting proved to be high, r = 0.97, and r = 0.99, respectively. The total variable error was 10.2%. The effects of position (standing versus lying) was investigated in a separate sample of…
