  • Geographic distribution and socio-economic determinants of women's nutritional status in Mali households

Open Access•Constance Awuor Gewa, Timothy F Leslie et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2013

Objective Mali is one of the poorest countries in Africa, with 72 % of its population surviving on less than $US 1·00 per day. Health and demographic indicators are bleak. With few exceptions, studies related to the health of women in Mali have largely been under-represented. In addition, in recent years a new type of malnutrition stemming from weight gain and obesity has been observed throughout Africa. The present study aimed to (i) describe ge…

  • Maternal–child overweight/obesity and undernutrition in Kenya: A geographic analysis

Open Access•Lisa R Pawloski, Lisa Pawloski et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2012

Objective The purpose of the study was to examine geographic relationships of nutritional status (BMI), including underweight, overweight and obesity, among Kenyan mothers and children. Design Spatial relationships were examined concerning BMI of the mothers and BMI-for-age percentiles of their children. These included spatial statistical measures of the clustering of segments of the population, in addition to inspection of co-location of signifi…

  • Sociodemographic determinants of growth among Malian adolescent females

Open Access•Timothy F Leslie, Lisa R Pawloski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2010

In Africa, research concerning the social determinants of poor nutritional status has typically focused on children under 5 years of age and has used defined categorical boundaries based on international reference standards. In this article, stunting and wasting of 1,157 Malian adolescent girls is measured through both categorical and continuous data. The focus on adolescent girls is significant because there is relatively little literature exami…

  • Classification tree analysis of stunting in Malian adolescent girls

Open Access•Lisa R Pawloski, Lisa Pawloski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2008

This study examines relationships between growth data and energy expenditure, economic status, and family structure among Malian adolescent girls, aged 10–17 years living in the Segou Region of Mali. Classification and regression trees (CART) were used as the primary methodology to identify high‐risk subgroups for stunting (measured as height‐for‐age) in a sample of 1,103 Malian adolescents. Because CART has been used rarely to examine growth and…

  • A cross-sectional examination of growth indicators from Thai adolescent girls: Evidence of obesity among Thai youth

Open Access•Lisa R Pawloski, Lisa Pawloski et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2008

The findings suggest the presence of overweight and obesity among this adolescent Thai population. These data may reflect the impact of the improved economic situation of Thailand as well as the impact of body image concerns among these young girls

  • A Comparison of Nutritional Indicators from Bambara and Fulani Girls Born in Paris, France and in the Segou Region of Mali

    Open Access•Lisa Pawloski•ARTICLE•Nutritional Anthropology•2005

Growth data from Bambara and Fulani girls are compared from those born and raised in France and those born and raised in Mali. The data reveal that Bambara and Fulani girls born in France are taller and heavier than their female counterparts born and raised in Mali. No indicators of obesity are evident among this sample. The sample's heights and weights match the U.S. reference data such that mean height-for-age z-score is −.02 ± .84, and the mea…

  • A cross-sectional examination of growth indicators from Nicaraguan adolescent girls: A comparison of anthropometric data from their Guatemalan counterparts

    Open Access•Lisa Pawloski, L R Pawloski et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2004

This study reveals that the Nicaraguan girls are undernourished when compared with other Latin American girls living in an improved overall environment. The data also reveal that the Nicaraguan girls have better indicators of nutritional status when compared with a cohort of poor Guatemalan girls

  • Mixed‐longitudinal analysis of growth data from malian adolescent girls: Evidence for compensatory gain

Open Access•Lisa R Pawloski, Lisa Pawloski•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2003

Cross‐sectional data have previously indicated poor growth and development among adolescent girls in Mali. These data have shown that Malian girls are shorter and lighter than their United States female counterparts. Many studies suggest that this evidence of poor growth and development is due to a combination of poor nutrient intake, high‐energy expenditure, and poor access to health care. At adolescence, individuals rarely follow a standard pat…

  • Growth and development of adolescent girls from the Segou Region of Mali (West Africa)

    Open Access•Lisa R Pawloski, Lisa Pawloski•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2002•Cited by: 6•References: 18

In Mali, adolescent girls face many physical stresses which, with a history of poor nutrition, can result in delayed growth and development. Despite the fact that adolescent girls encounter nutritional demands, most research in Mali has focused only on young children. This study examines anthropometric and reproductive data on 1,056 adolescent girls (aged 10–17 years) from the Segou Region of Mali. When compared to the reference population, the M…
