Open Access•Fumihiko Sueki, Anton Luis Sevilla•ARTICLE•International Journal of Asian…•2020

Today, the modern value systems that once held sway have fallen apart, and people throughout the world are wandering in an aimless state. Amidst this, we are pressed to ask, “What kind of a new ethics might we construct?” We need to consider the possibility of an ethics that focuses on the religious view of humankind (previously ignored by modernity), that goes beyond this life, and includes the next life. In this article, I examine the way of be…

This article examines the attitudes and responses of Chinese Buddhists with regard to the Sino-Japanese war of the 1930s and 1940s by focusing on two figures, Taixu and Leguan. Both the Japanese and Chinese Buddhists were confronted with the same problems, such as the relation between the universalism of Buddhism and the question of nationalism, as well as the tension between the Buddhist prohibition against killing and the necessity of killing o…

    Open Access•Fumihiko Sueki•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Religious…•1999

It has long been acknowledged that some works in the Nichiren corpus were not written by Nichiren but attributed to him retrospectively by later disciples. Those texts widely agreed by scholars to be apocryphal are included in a separate volume of the critical edition of ms writings. The problem lies with those writing's where Nichiren yauthorship is disputed and whose authenticity can be neither established nor disproven. This study suggests a n…

  • Two seemingly contradictory aspects of the teaching of innate enlightenment (hongaku) in medieval Japan

    Open Access•Fumihiko Sueki•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Religious…•1995

The Sanjfi-shi ka no kotogaki [The thirty-four item report] is one of the most representative works in the tradition of hongaku thought in the Japanese medieval Tendai school. Two seemingly contradictory aspects can be found when analyzing the theory found in this text. The first aspect is the absolute affirmation of this world on the basis of the principle of selfconsistency, which seems to require no practice for realizing enlightenment. The se…
