  • Optimizing outcomes when treating functional neurological disorder in acute care settings

    Open Access•Melissa J Greenfield, Aaron D Fobian et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The cases highlight potential challenges when caring for patients presenting with FND in acute care settings. The challenges covered include over- or underutilization of diagnostic workups and consultation, over- or underutilization of psychopharmacological medications, and over- or undertreating a medical condition when a functional symptom is present. In each case, these lapses and errors caused the patient distress, additional treatments, care…

  • Manic episode following psilocybin use in a man with bipolar II disorder

    Open Access•Haniya J Halim, Bradley G Burk et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

There has been an increase in research on the topic of psychedelic substances and their effects as treatment options in neuropsychiatric conditions. Psilocybin is a psychedelic drug that has recently garnered increased interest as an effective treatment modality for treatment-resistant depression, depression associated with terminal conditions, certain substance use disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, sparse data exist as to th…

  • Delta-8-THC association with psychosis

    Open Access•Chelsea R Miller, Bradley G Burk et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

This report adds to the limited body of evidence on Δ 8 -THC documenting a temporal association between Δ 8 -THC use and the development of psychotic symptoms. A strong body of research already correlates the continued use of Δ 9 -THC with psychosis, and Δ 8 -THC acts at the same CB 1 and CB 2 receptors as Δ 9 -THC. Therefore, it is hypothesized that Δ 8 -THC may have similar adverse psychiatric effects as Δ 9 -THC. These conclusions are not with…

  • Non-suicidal self-injury in developing countries

Open Access•Srinagesh Mannekote Thippaiah, Muralidhara Shankarapura Nanjappa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2021

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) may be understood as a physical and behavioral expression of emotional distress. Over the past 70 years, it has been variably formulated as a type of emotional reaction to various stressors. NSSI has complex goals, sometimes implicit, but overall it serves as a transient psychological relief. Many believe that NSSI is a maladaptive behavior and is not related to suicide, with the primary differentiating…

  • Sex Differences in the Peripheral Immune System in Patients with Depression

Open Access•Badari Birur, Ellen M Amrock et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2017

Our findings indicate a sex-specific relationship between inflammation and depression, which may be important in identifying potential psychopathology and suggesting novel immunomodulatory treatments for depressed females

  • An Evidence-Based Review of Early Intervention and Prevention of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Open Access•Badari Birur, Norman C Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Community Mental Health Journal•2017
